A Toronto to Detroit car service covers about 385 km, typically 4 to 4.75 hours from downtown Toronto, almost all of it on Highway 401 to Windsor. The car then crosses the Detroit River by the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or the Gordie Howe International Bridge, chosen on the day from live waits. Every passenger needs a passport, passport card, NEXUS or enhanced licence.
The route overview, fares and booking for both directions sit on our Detroit to Toronto car service page. This post is the planner behind it: what each stretch of the 401 is like, where the time goes, how the three Detroit River crossings differ, and the small decisions that turn a long day into an easy one. Figures are typical planning numbers from our dispatch mapping; the reservation engine quotes the exact fixed fare for your address, date, time and vehicle.
How does a Toronto to Detroit car service actually run?
A chauffeur collects you at home, the office, a hotel or Pearson, joins the 401 westbound and stays on it for roughly 360 km to Windsor. At the end of the highway the car takes one of three crossings into Michigan, clears US Customs and Border Protection at the booth, and drops you downtown, in the suburbs or at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). There are no transfers, no rental counters and no parking. You can work, sleep or watch the farmland roll past. Coming home, the same pattern runs in reverse, with a Canada Border Services Agency booth on the Windsor side.
How far is it, leg by leg?
Planning figures from downtown Toronto (Union Station area), before any border wait:
| Point on the route | Distance from downtown | Typical elapsed time |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | 27 km | 25 to 45 min |
| Milton | 55 km | 40 to 55 min |
| Cambridge | 95 km | 65 to 85 min |
| Woodstock | 140 km | 90 to 110 min |
| London, Ontario | 190 km | 2 to 2.5 h |
| Chatham | about 285 km | 3 to 3.5 h |
| Windsor (Detroit River crossings) | 365 km | 3.75 to 4.25 h |
| Downtown Detroit | 385 km | 4 to 4.75 h |
| Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) | about 410 km | 4.25 to 5 h |
From Pearson, subtract roughly 20 km and 20 minutes from the Windsor and Detroit figures, because the airport sits on the west side of the city and the car joins the 401 almost immediately.
Where does the time go on the 401?
Not where most people expect. The open stretch through southwestern Ontario is usually steady. The real variables sit at the two ends. Leaving Toronto, the 401 through Mississauga and past Pearson is one of the busiest stretches of highway on the continent, and a 7:30 a.m. weekday start can spend 45 minutes reaching Milton. Near Windsor, the approach to the crossings and the booth itself decide the last half hour. Between those, construction zones near Cambridge and London, harvest-season farm traffic and winter squalls off Lake Huron and Lake Erie are the usual delays. Dispatch checks Ontario 511 before departure and the chauffeur rechecks on the road.

Ambassador Bridge, tunnel or Gordie Howe: which crossing should we use?
Three crossings link Windsor and Detroit, and each suits a different destination.
- The Ambassador Bridge lands near Corktown and Mexicantown, with quick access to I-75 and I-96. It suits the western suburbs, Dearborn and the airport.
- The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel runs from downtown Windsor to downtown Detroit. It is the shortest line to Ford Field, the Renaissance Center and the riverfront hotels, but it has vehicle restrictions, so dispatch confirms the tunnel suits your vehicle class before planning on it.
- The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened to traffic in July 2026, connects the end of Highway 401 directly with I-75 in southwest Detroit. It removes the city-street section on the Windsor side, which makes it attractive for the airport and points south.
The chauffeur compares live waits on the day. Bridge and tunnel tolls on the planned route are included in the fixed fare, and it does not change because of the crossing chosen.
Which crossing suits which destination?
| Destination in Michigan | Usual first choice | Good alternative | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Detroit, Ford Field, riverfront hotels | Detroit-Windsor Tunnel | Ambassador Bridge | Shortest line into downtown |
| Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) | Gordie Howe Bridge | Ambassador Bridge | Highway the whole way to I-75 and I-94 |
| Dearborn | Ambassador Bridge | Gordie Howe Bridge | Quick link to I-94 and I-96 |
| Ann Arbor | Gordie Howe Bridge | Ambassador Bridge | Interstate routing west |
| Auburn Hills, Troy, northern suburbs | Ambassador Bridge or tunnel | Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia | Avoids downtown at peak hours |
For the northern suburbs, crossing at Sarnia's Blue Water Bridge and coming down I-69 or I-94 can beat Windsor on a congested day. It adds kilometres but sometimes saves time.
What documents do we need at the Detroit River?
Every passenger needs an accepted travel document: a passport, a passport card, a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's licence for eligible citizens. Children need their own documents, and a child travelling without both parents should carry a consent letter. Visitors who are neither Canadian nor American should check their own entry requirements with US Customs and Border Protection before booking and, for the return, with the Canada Border Services Agency. Our documents to cross the US-Canada border post walks through each case. At the booth, documents are handed over together, and each passenger answers for their own trip and purchases.
What does a sample business day look like?
A supplier meeting in Dearborn, for two people starting in Etobicoke:
- 5:45 a.m. Pickup in Etobicoke; the 401 is still quiet.
- 7:15 a.m. Short stop near Woodstock for coffee.
- 9:15 a.m. Ambassador Bridge after a short wait.
- 10:00 a.m. Arrival in Dearborn, 30 minutes before the meeting.
- 3:30 p.m. Departure, ahead of the Detroit evening rush.
- About 8:30 p.m. Home, after dinner near London.
That is a 14- to 15-hour day for the chauffeur, which is why we plan it carefully: proper breaks, a meal stop and a realistic margin at the border. Some itineraries are better split over two days. Dispatch will say so honestly when you book.
Is a same-day return from Detroit sensible?
Sometimes. Eight to nine and a half hours of driving with a few hours in Michigan is a full day for passengers and chauffeur alike. It works for a single meeting, an airport drop at DTW or a game where you leave right at the end. It works less well for anything with an uncertain finish. The alternatives are a one-way trip each direction with the chauffeur returning empty, the chauffeur staying over in Detroit or Windsor and driving you home the next day, or a second chauffeur on a very long same-day schedule. Overnight trips and second chauffeurs are arranged at booking, and dispatch confirms the plan in writing.
When does an hourly chauffeur beat a one-way trip?
When the day in Michigan has more than one stop. A plant visit in Warren, lunch in Royal Oak and an evening event downtown is three addresses, waiting time and an uncertain finish, which is exactly what an hourly chauffeur from Toronto is designed for. The car and chauffeur stay with you, bags stay in the trunk and the plan can change by text. Hourly bookings for sedans, SUVs and Sprinters have a 3-hour minimum, with extra time in 30-minute blocks, and long cross-border days are confirmed in writing.
Where are the good places to stop on the way?
The 401 has ONroute service centres along the way, with fuel, washrooms and quick food; the current list of locations is on the ONroute site. For a real meal, London is the natural halfway point at about 190 km, with plenty of options a few minutes off the highway; our London, Ontario car service page covers the city. Chatham is a quieter stop about 80 km short of Windsor. A good rhythm for passengers and chauffeur alike is a short stop every two to three hours, which also gives everyone a chance to stretch before the border.

What time should we leave Toronto?
Work backwards from your appointment in Michigan, then add three buffers: the Toronto exit, the border and the destination itself. Practical rules from our desk:
- Weekday mornings, leave before 6:30 a.m. or after 9:30 a.m. to skip the worst of the 401 past Pearson.
- Avoid reaching Windsor between about 7 and 9 a.m. or 3 and 6 p.m. on weekdays, when commuter traffic builds at the crossings.
- Remember that Michigan is on Eastern Time, the same as Toronto, so there is no clock change on this trip.
- On Canadian and US long weekends, add generously; the holidays fall on different dates, so check both calendars.
Which vehicle suits a four-hour highway run?
For one or two travellers with luggage, a business or first-class sedan is quiet and comfortable for the distance. A business SUV seats up to six with four large bags and suits families and small teams. For larger groups, sports fans or a team travelling with sample cases, the Sprinter for group transportation gives everyone a proper seat and room to move. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle is available if you book ahead; tell us at booking about the wheelchair or scooter. NEXUS-holding chauffeurs can be requested for border trips. Child seats are available at booking.
Can we connect with a flight at Detroit Metropolitan Airport?
Yes, and many Toronto travellers do, especially for routes Detroit serves well. Plan the drive so you arrive at DTW with the airline's recommended check-in time to spare plus a border buffer. Our Detroit airport (DTW) transfer page covers the run itself, and the Detroit Metropolitan Airport site lists terminals and airlines. Coming home, flight tracking means the chauffeur follows your landing; included waiting is 30 minutes for US flights and 60 minutes for other international arrivals, from actual landing. Our travel desk can book the flight and any hotel on the same account.
What mistakes do people make on the Detroit run?
- Leaving Toronto at 8 a.m. on a weekday and losing an hour before Milton.
- Assuming the tunnel suits every vehicle; large vans may be directed to a bridge.
- Forgetting a child's passport or consent letter.
- Booking a same-day return around an event that may run late.
- Crossing home on a Sunday evening of a US holiday weekend without extra time.
- Buying alcohol in Michigan on a day trip without knowing the duty rules; our post on the duty free allowance by car explains them.
What is there to see for a first-time visitor?
Downtown Detroit has changed a great deal, and the riverfront, the Renaissance Center, Campus Martius and the Ford Field and Comerica Park district are within a short ride of each other. The Henry Ford museum complex in Dearborn is a major draw for families and history fans. Visit Detroit lists current events and attractions. For football fans, our Detroit Lions game trip from Toronto post plans a full game day, and travellers heading further west can read our Toronto to Chicago private driver guide.
