A Detroit to Toronto car service covers about 370 km and usually takes 3.75 to 4.5 hours, driving Highway 401 across southwestern Ontario and crossing at Windsor by the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or the new Gordie Howe International Bridge. TorontoBlackLimousine.com drives it both ways, door to door. Book your Detroit car direct and see the fixed fare before you confirm.
Detroit to Toronto car service: the route in both directions
Detroit is the longest of our regular cross-border runs that still works as a same-day trip, and the road is simple. From downtown Toronto the chauffeur takes the Gardiner or the 427 to Highway 401 and stays on it for most of the journey, past Milton, Cambridge, Woodstock, London and Chatham, to Windsor at the western tip of Ontario. From Windsor the car crosses the Detroit River into Michigan and continues to your address. Northbound from Detroit, the same route runs in reverse. It is a single booking with one chauffeur and one car throughout; there is no change of vehicle at the river. Start from our Toronto to the USA hub for other cities, or read the terms of our cross-border limo service.

Which crossing does the chauffeur use between Windsor and Detroit?
Windsor now has three road crossings into Detroit, plus a longer option at Sarnia.
- Gordie Howe International Bridge, the newest crossing, which opened to traffic in July 2026. It connects Highway 401 on the Canadian side to the interstate network south-west of downtown Detroit, which makes it a natural line for DTW, Dearborn and Ann Arbor. See the Gordie Howe International Bridge site for current lanes and hours; the toll on the planned route is included in your fixed fare.
- Ambassador Bridge, the long-established crossing between west Windsor and south-west Detroit; ambassadorbridge.com posts updates.
- Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which runs under the river between the two downtowns and suits Ford Field, Comerica Park and downtown hotels; check the tunnel's own site for any restrictions.
- Blue Water Bridge between Sarnia and Port Huron, about 110 km north of Detroit, useful when the Windsor crossings are backed up or for northern suburbs; see the Blue Water Bridge site.
The chauffeur checks the CBSA border wait times before reaching Windsor and picks the crossing that suits your address and the queue on the day.

What documents do passengers need between Detroit and Toronto?
Every passenger speaks to the officer and needs an accepted document, whatever their age. As a planning guide, based on what the border agencies publish:
- Canadian citizens: a passport or other document the CBSA accepts on return, and for the US a passport, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
- US citizens: a passport, passport card or NEXUS card to enter Canada.
- Other nationalities: a passport plus any visa that applies. Canada's electronic travel authorization is for arrivals by air; for the land border into the US, read CBP's I-94 page.
Bring a consent letter for a child travelling without both parents. NEXUS lanes help only if everyone in the car, including the chauffeur, is a member. Our crossing the border by limo guide covers what happens at the booth.
Detroit Lions games from Toronto: how does the trip work?
Toronto has a lot of Lions fans, and a game at Ford Field in downtown Detroit is one of our favourite trips to run. The stadium is about 370 km from downtown Toronto, and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel lands close to it, so the approach is short once you reach Windsor. The Lions traditionally host a game on US Thanksgiving, which falls in late November, when the border is busy in both directions. Most groups book an SUV, an Executive Sprinter or a Sprinter luxury van by the hour, and many stay the night in Detroit or Windsor rather than drive home after a late finish. Our Detroit Lions game trips page covers group sizes and timing, and the Detroit Lions site lists the schedule and stadium rules.
Detroit airport (DTW) to Toronto
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is a major hub, and some travellers from Toronto and southwestern Ontario choose it for a US domestic trip or a connection. Our chauffeur tracks the flight and waits at the curb in the airport's commercial pickup area, with 30 minutes of free waiting after a US domestic landing and 60 minutes after other international arrivals; meet and greet inside with a name board is optional at booking. From DTW the car usually crosses at the Gordie Howe International Bridge or the Ambassador Bridge and follows the 401 to Toronto, about 370 to 385 km. Our Detroit airport (DTW) page has more on departure timing and which terminal to expect.
Is Detroit a same-day round trip from Toronto?
It can be, but it is a long day: roughly eight to nine hours of driving before any time in Detroit. For a single meeting, a game or an appointment, the best booking is an hourly chauffeur: the chauffeur waits while you are busy, then drives you home. Hourly bookings start at 3 hours for sedans, SUVs, vans and Sprinters and continue in 30-minute blocks, and a Detroit day will run to well over ten hours. For anything later than an early-evening finish, we recommend staying over, because we do not want a chauffeur driving four hours home after midnight at the end of a sixteen-hour day. We build every long trip around proper rest.
One way, two one-ways or the chauffeur staying over?
There are three ways to book Detroit, and the length of your stay decides it.
- One way. Drop or pickup only; the car returns empty. Good for relocations, a flight from DTW or a stay of a week.
- Two one-ways. We drop you in Detroit and return on your chosen date. Good for stays of two nights or more.
- Round trip with the chauffeur staying over. The same car and chauffeur stay near your hotel, drive you around Detroit the next day and bring you home. Good for game weekends, the auto show and two-day business visits.
Tell us which suits you at booking; for overnights, a coordinator confirms the arrangement in writing, and the fixed fare covers the whole plan.

Where are the rest stops between Toronto and Detroit?
Highway 401 has ONroute service centres at intervals across southwestern Ontario, with washrooms, fuel and food, and they make natural places to stretch on a four-hour drive. Most customers stop once, somewhere around London or Chatham, for fifteen or twenty minutes. Windsor itself has plenty of places for a meal before or after the border. The chauffeur also plans a break on the far side on longer days, and on a same-day round trip takes a proper rest while you are at your event or meeting. If you have a preferred stop, a coffee order or a need to take a call without road noise, tell us at booking.
What is the best time to drive from Toronto to Detroit?
Leave Toronto after the morning rush if you can: the 401 through Mississauga and Milton is slow from about 6:30 to 9:30 on weekdays, and the same stretch is slow westbound on Friday afternoons. The border at Windsor is busiest at shift changes for commuters and commercial traffic, on Friday evenings and on holiday weekends; Canadian Thanksgiving, US Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July and Canada Day are all heavier than usual. Winter brings snow squalls off Lake Huron and Lake Erie across the flat stretch between London and Chatham. Our cars run winter tires from November to April, and dispatch watches Ontario 511 before the car leaves.
Which vehicle should I book between Detroit and Toronto?
| Party | Suggested vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two travellers | Business sedan | Efficient and quiet for four hours on the 401 |
| Executive or VIP | First-class sedan | Mercedes S-Class for a working drive |
| Family or small group with bags | SUV | Six seats, cargo space, winter traction |
| Premium group of up to six | Premier luxury SUV | Navigator or Escalade class |
| Team or fans up to 6 | First-class Executive Sprinter | Captain's chairs and work tables |
| Group of up to 12 | Sprinter luxury van | Game trips and delegations |
Party buses and coaches for larger groups come from vetted partner operators in the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network and are priced in writing by a coordinator.
What does the Detroit to Toronto fare include?
We do not print prices. The reservation engine shows the fixed, all-in fare before you confirm: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, gratuity and airport fees where they apply, with HST shown separately, and no meter or surge. What changes it is the vehicle class, the exact distance, extra stops such as a pickup in Windsor or London, waiting beyond the included allowance, the date and season, and whether you choose one way, round trip, hourly or an overnight. Read how our fares work for the details. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before pickup, with a sliding scale after that.
What is there to do in Detroit for a Toronto visitor?
Beyond football, downtown Detroit has baseball at Comerica Park, hockey and basketball at the arena in the District Detroit, and theatre and music in the Midtown and downtown venues. The automotive heritage draws many Canadian visitors: The Henry Ford museum complex is in Dearborn, and the city's auto show is a major date on the industry calendar (check the current year's dates before booking). The Detroit Institute of Arts and the Riverwalk are easy additions to a day. Visit Detroit lists what is on. On the Canadian side, Windsor is worth a stop in itself, and Visit Windsor Essex covers the wineries of the Lake Erie shore.
Can I book the flight and hotel with the car?
Yes. Many Detroit trips involve a hotel night, a flight from DTW or a return flight into Pearson, and our travel desk books flights, hotels and packages on the same itinerary as the car. Game weekends and the auto show fill downtown hotels quickly, so it helps to book the room and the car together. You are also welcome to compare fares on your own at BookingWorldwide.net and then book the chauffeur around your times. The car is always booked directly with our Toronto dispatch desk.
What should we declare coming back to Toronto from Detroit?
Every returning Canadian declares goods bought or received in the US, and the personal exemption depends on how long you were away; the CBSA's what to declare page sets it out. Keep receipts together and know your total. Cannabis cannot cross the border in either direction, even though both Michigan and Ontario allow it. Alcohol and tobacco above the allowance are dutiable, and food, plants and meat have their own rules. Team jerseys and souvenirs are part of the total too. The chauffeur will remind everyone before the booth but never answers for a passenger.
Why drive with a chauffeur rather than fly from Toronto to Detroit?
Flights between Toronto and Detroit are short, but the door-to-door time grows once you add the trip to Pearson, security, the flight, the walk at DTW and the drive into Detroit, which is about 35 km from the airport. A car goes from your door to your hotel or the stadium with no connections, carries as much luggage as you like and lets the group travel together. For a family, a sports group or a team taking work equipment, one vehicle is simpler than several tickets. It is also a four-hour working session for an executive who needs quiet time for calls. Travellers going further west can continue to Chicago or south to Cleveland and Erie.
How do I book a Detroit to Toronto car direct?
Open the reservation engine on this page, the floating Book now button or our booking page. Enter the pickup and drop-off addresses, date, time, passengers and bags, and a flight number for DTW or Pearson pickups. Choose the vehicle and extras such as child seats or meet and greet, and the fixed fare appears before you confirm. We send the chauffeur's details the day before together with the border checklist. You book directly with our Toronto dispatch desk: no app, no marketplace and one team responsible for the whole trip.
