Buffalo airport to Toronto by private car is about 160 km from Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) to downtown Toronto, typically 105–135 minutes of driving plus the border crossing, usually at the Peace Bridge or the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Every passenger needs valid border documents. The chauffeur tracks your flight and the fixed fare appears before you book your Buffalo airport car.
Buffalo airport to Toronto: a cross-border car with one fixed fare
Plenty of Toronto travellers fly from Buffalo: US domestic fares can be lower, some routes are more direct, and for trips inside the United States it can mean clearing US border checks once, by road, rather than at an airport. The weak link has always been the ground journey. Buses and shared vans run to their own timetables and stop for other people; rental cars add one-way and cross-border complications; and leaving your own car in an American airport lot means a long drive home after the trip. TorontoBlackLimousine.com runs the Buffalo airport to Toronto transfer as a private car in both directions: one party, one border-ready chauffeur, a fixed fare seen before you confirm, and a flight-tracked pickup at BUF that follows delays. It is the direct version of a Buffalo airport shuttle to Toronto, and it goes door to door, from Rosedale, Oakville or Vaughan to the departures curb in Cheektowaga.
How far is Buffalo airport from Toronto, and how long does it take?
The drive is QEW all the way to the Niagara frontier, then a bridge, then the airport on the east side of Buffalo. These are planning figures before any wait at the border; the reservation engine prices your exact address, date, time and vehicle.
| Between Buffalo airport (BUF) and | Distance | Typical drive time (excluding border wait) |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto / Union Station | 160 km | 105–135 min |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | 170 km | 110–140 min |
| Mississauga | 140 km | 95–120 min |
| Oakville | 125 km | 85–105 min |
| Burlington | 110 km | 75–95 min |
| Hamilton | 100 km | 70–90 min |
| Vaughan | 185 km | 120–150 min |
| Markham | 195 km | 125–155 min |
| Niagara Falls, Ontario | 40 km | 30–40 min |
Border waits range from a few minutes to well over an hour on holiday weekends; see the timing section below. Our Toronto to Buffalo airport route covers the drive leg by leg.
What documents do you need to cross the border in a car?
Every passenger in the car needs their own valid document, adults and children alike. For the US entry, US and Canadian citizens generally use a passport, a NEXUS card, a US passport card or an enhanced driver's licence where eligible, under the rules set out by US Customs and Border Protection and its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page. Citizens of other countries need a passport and whatever visa or travel authorization applies to them, and those entering by land should read CBP's I-94 page before the trip. Coming back into Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency sets the rules, and its declaration guidance explains what to declare. Minors travelling without both parents should carry a consent letter. Our chauffeur cannot talk anyone through a border booth without documents, so check them the night before. Our guide to documents for the US-Canada border has a checklist.
Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston or Rainbow: which bridge will you use?
Three crossings connect the Niagara frontier with Western New York for this trip. The Peace Bridge links Fort Erie with Buffalo and is the most direct crossing for BUF. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge sits north of the falls and connects with the interstate towards Buffalo; the Rainbow Bridge crosses right at Niagara Falls. The Lewiston-Queenston and Rainbow bridges are run by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. Your chauffeur picks the crossing on the day, based on posted wait times and traffic on the QEW, and may switch mid-journey if one bridge backs up. NEXUS lanes are available at some crossings when they are open and when everyone in the vehicle is a NEXUS member; if even one passenger is not, the car uses the general lanes. Our crossing the border by limo guide explains the process at the booth.

How long does the border crossing add?
It depends on the day, the hour and the direction. Weekday mid-mornings are often quick; Friday afternoons southbound, Sunday evenings northbound, US and Canadian holiday weekends, Bills game days and summer tourist peaks can all build long lines. The CBSA publishes border wait times for Canada-bound traffic, and the bridge operators post theirs; our dispatch checks both before the car leaves Toronto. As a rule we plan a buffer of 30 minutes on a quiet weekday and 60–90 minutes at busy times, and we recommend you do the same when choosing a pickup time for a departure. Secondary inspection is occasional and usually brief, but it happens, and the buffer covers it. Our explainer on Peace Bridge wait times looks at the patterns in more detail.
What happens at the border booth?
In most cases nobody leaves the car. The chauffeur pulls up to the booth, lowers the windows, and the officer asks each passenger for documents and a few questions: citizenship, where you are going, how long you will be away and what you are bringing. Answer for yourself, keep it short and truthful, and have documents in hand rather than in a checked bag in the trunk. Going south to BUF, the officer is an American CBP officer; coming north into Canada it is a CBSA officer, and you declare purchases and goods according to Canadian rules. Occasionally the officer directs the vehicle to secondary inspection, where passengers may be asked to go inside; the chauffeur waits with the car. Never carry cannabis across the border in either direction, even if it was bought legally.
Where does the chauffeur pick you up at Buffalo airport?
Buffalo Niagara International, operated by the NFTA, has one passenger terminal. After you land and collect your bags, your fare includes a curbside pickup at the terminal's ground transportation area for pre-arranged cars; the chauffeur tracks your flight, arrives before you are through, and messages the car, plate and exact position. Meet & greet inside baggage claim with a name board is an optional add-on, available at booking, which is useful for first-time visitors or older travellers. The airport's official site carries current information on the terminal and its ground transportation, and we follow its layout on the day rather than printing zones here. Included waiting starts at landing: 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US flights, 60 minutes on other international arrivals, then 15-minute blocks, always with a message first.
How early should you leave Toronto for a flight from Buffalo?
Plan backwards and be generous, because there is a border in the middle:
- Take your airline's recommended arrival time at BUF (commonly about two hours for US domestic flights; check your airline).
- Add the drive: 105–135 minutes from downtown Toronto, 110–140 from Pearson, more from Markham or Vaughan.
- Add the border buffer: 30 minutes on a quiet weekday, 60–90 minutes on Fridays, holiday weekends and summer peaks.
- Add 15–20 minutes of general slack for QEW traffic through Hamilton and St. Catharines.
For a mid-morning flight that often means leaving downtown Toronto before dawn. Our post on flying out of Buffalo from Toronto walks through real examples.
Buffalo airport shuttle to Toronto, bus or private car?
Shared shuttles and intercity buses between Buffalo and Toronto are the budget options, and for a solo traveller with a carry-on and a flexible schedule they can make sense. Their limits are real, though: fixed departure times that may not match your flight, stops for other passengers, and a border inspection where everyone on the bus waits for the slowest passenger. A limousine service from Buffalo airport to Toronto, by contrast, leaves when your flight lands, goes straight to your door, and carries only your party through the booth. For families, groups splitting one fixed fare, business travellers who need to take calls, and anyone landing late at night, the private car is simpler. The other comparison is driving yourself and parking at BUF; our piece on Buffalo airport parking versus a cross-border car sets out that choice.
What should you know about bringing purchases back into Canada?
Many travellers come home through Buffalo with shopping, gifts or duty-free bags. At the Canadian booth each passenger declares what they are bringing in, and the personal exemption you can claim depends on how long you have been out of the country, with separate limits for alcohol and tobacco. The rules are set by the CBSA and change from time to time, so read the CBSA declaration guidance before the trip rather than relying on memory. Keep receipts together in a carry-on, pack purchases where they can be reached if the officer asks, and never carry cannabis across the border in either direction. Our post on duty-free allowances when returning by car explains how the categories work in plain language.
What does the Buffalo airport car service include?
We do not publish prices on this site. The reservation engine shows the fixed, all-in fare before you confirm: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, 407 ETR tolls if used, airport fees and gratuity, with HST shown separately. There is no meter and no surge, and the fare does not rise because the border was slow. What changes the fare is the vehicle class, the distance from your address, extra stops, waiting beyond the included time at the airport, and the date. A Buffalo airport car service from Oakville costs less than one from Markham simply because the drive is shorter. Our how our fares work page explains the structure, and our cross-border limo service page covers other US destinations with the same approach.
Which vehicle suits a Buffalo airport transfer?
On a cross-border run, comfort matters more because the trip is long. A business sedan takes two passengers and two large cases; a first-class sedan adds rear-seat space for a working executive. For a family with checked luggage, an SUV seats up to six with room behind, and it is our most common vehicle on the Buffalo run. Groups travelling together, such as a team heading to a US conference or friends flying to Florida, fit in a Sprinter with seven to twelve seats and their bags. Remember that at the border every passenger is inspected, so a single larger vehicle is usually quicker than two cars through two separate booths.

Winter, lake-effect snow and the QEW
Western New York is famous for lake-effect snow, and the stretch south and east of Buffalo can see heavy bands while Toronto is dry. The QEW along the Niagara Peninsula also catches squalls off Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Our cars run winter tires from November to April, chauffeurs check forecasts and road reports on both sides of the border before departure, and in serious weather we move pickups earlier rather than rush. If your flight is cancelled or rebooked because of a storm, message us the new flight and we move the booking. On the Canadian side, Ontario 511 carries QEW closures and conditions. The safest drive is the one planned with time to spare, and that is how we plan every winter Buffalo run.
Keep the chauffeur: Buffalo meetings, shopping and game days
The hourly chauffeur is our lead product and it crosses the border too. If you fly into Buffalo for meetings in the city or Amherst before driving home, keep the car by the hour: one car and chauffeur from a three-hour minimum, extra time in 30-minute blocks, luggage secure in the vehicle. Travellers returning from a trip sometimes add a stop at the Walden Galleria near the airport; see our Walden Galleria trip idea. Football fans use the same logic on game days, and our Buffalo Bills games page covers the trip from Toronto to the stadium and back. Details on how hourly bookings work are on our hourly chauffeur service page.
Other nearby airports and the reverse trip
Buffalo is one of three airports within reach of the Niagara frontier for Toronto travellers. Niagara Falls International (IAG), on the New York side of the river, has a smaller, largely leisure schedule, and Hamilton airport (YHM) is the Canadian option on the same side of the lake. Private jet passengers using Buffalo are covered on our Buffalo private aviation page. If you are an American traveller coming the other way, our Buffalo to Toronto page covers the northbound trip and what to expect at the Canadian booth. Our travel desk can compare flights from Buffalo, Pearson and Hamilton and book a hotel alongside the car, and every airport we serve is on the airports hub.
