For a Toronto airport taxi, limo or UP Express, match the mode to the trip. The UP Express runs between Union Station and Pearson Terminal 1 in about 28 minutes and suits a solo traveller with light bags near Union. A pre-booked black car covers the 27 km door to door in 25–45 minutes and suits Terminal 3, families, groups, heavy luggage and late nights. Book the car leg here.
Toronto airport taxi, limo or UP Express: the quick verdict
There is no single best way between Toronto Pearson and the city, and anyone who says otherwise is selling one of them. We run black cars, so you might expect us to say "always take a limo". We will not. The UP Express is a fast, simple rail link for the right traveller. The licensed taxis and limousines at Pearson's stands serve people who did not book ahead. Rideshare fills gaps. A pre-booked chauffeur is the right answer for a specific set of trips: door to door away from Union Station, Terminal 3, families and groups, heavy luggage, late nights, and any arrival that turns into meetings. This guide sets the options side by side on the five things that matter, time, comfort, luggage, door-to-door reach and groups, so you can choose in a minute and book the car only when the car makes the trip better.
What are the ground transport options at Pearson?
Five options cover almost every trip:
- UP Express: the airport rail link from Union Station via Bloor, Mount Dennis and Weston to Pearson Terminal 1; schedules and fares are on upexpress.com.
- Taxi or airport limo from the stand: licensed vehicles queue at each terminal for walk-up passengers; Pearson describes them on its taxis and limos page.
- Rideshare: app-booked cars that use their own pickup zone at the terminals.
- Public buses: TTC and other transit routes that connect the airport to the subway and regional networks, listed on Pearson's public transit page.
- Pre-booked black car: a chauffeur dispatched to your flight, waiting at the terminal's pre-arranged pickup area, at a fixed fare agreed in advance. That is our Pearson airport limo service.
How long does each option take to downtown Toronto?
Time from the terminal to downtown depends as much on the first and last kilometre as on the main leg.
| Option | Main leg | What to add | Typical total to a downtown door |
|---|---|---|---|
| UP Express | about 28 min Union to Terminal 1 (operator figure) | walk to the T1 station; waiting for the next train; getting from Union to your door | short if you stay beside Union, longer elsewhere |
| Taxi or limo from the stand | 25–45 min for about 27 km | queue at the stand at busy times | 25–45 min plus any queue |
| Rideshare | 25–45 min | walk to the rideshare zone; waiting for a match | 25–45 min plus the wait |
| Pre-booked black car | 25–45 min for about 27 km | none: the car is timed to your landing | 25–45 min, door to door |
At weekday rush hours the train has a clear edge because it runs on its own corridor, while every road option shares the Gardiner, the 427 and the 401.
UP Express vs taxi: which is faster to Union Station?
For the specific trip from Terminal 1 to Union Station, the train is hard to beat in heavy traffic. Its timing does not depend on the Gardiner, and at 8 a.m. or 5 p.m. on a weekday a taxi can take noticeably longer than the UP Express. Late at night or on a quiet Sunday morning, a taxi or car covers the 27 km in roughly 25 minutes, and it starts moving as soon as you sit down, so the two are close. The comparison shifts the moment Union Station is not your real destination. If you are going to Yorkville, Liberty Village, the Beaches or a suburb, the train delivers you to Union and you still need another leg. A taxi or car takes you to the door. So "up express vs taxi" is really a question about where you are going, not which is faster in the abstract.
Comfort compared
Comfort means different things to different travellers, so here is a plain description. The UP Express has proper seats, luggage space near the doors and a smooth ride; you share the carriage with other passengers and you may stand at busy times. A taxi from the stand is a standard licensed vehicle, assigned in order; the condition and size vary. Rideshare comfort depends on the car and driver the app sends. A pre-booked black car is a late-model sedan, SUV or Sprinter of the class you chose, cleaned before the trip, with a suited chauffeur who handles the bags, and it is private: you can take a call, sleep or talk without an audience. None of the options is uncomfortable for a 30-minute trip. The gap widens after a long-haul flight, with children, or when you need to arrive composed.

Luggage compared
| Luggage situation | UP Express | Taxi / rideshare | Pre-booked black car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carry-on only | Easy | Easy | Easy |
| One large case each, two people | Manageable | Usually fits a sedan | Fits a business sedan |
| Family of four, four cases, stroller | Hard work on platforms and escalators | Depends on the car sent | SUV booked in advance |
| Skis, golf clubs, hockey bags | Awkward | Often too big | SUV or Sprinter, noted at booking |
| Group of seven or more with bags | Several trips to the platform | Several cars | One Sprinter |
The rule of thumb is simple: what you can carry comfortably on a train, take on the train. What you cannot, put in a trunk that was chosen for it. Our chauffeurs load and unload, so your bags go from the curb to your door without you lifting them again.
Door to door: who actually reaches your address?
Only road options reach your address. The UP Express serves five stations, and the Pearson station is at Terminal 1 only. If you are staying at a hotel connected to Union Station through the PATH, or a short walk away, the train is effectively door to door. Anywhere else needs a second leg: the subway, a streetcar, a taxi from Union or a long walk with bags. A taxi, rideshare or pre-booked car takes you from the terminal curb to the front door, the hotel's front drive or the office lobby. For trips that do not start or end in Toronto at all, such as Mississauga (about 12 km from Pearson), Vaughan (about 20 km) or Oakville (about 30 km), the train is not an option and the choice is between road vehicles. The trip planner lists kilometres and drive times for other destinations.
Groups and families: the per-party view
A train fare is per person; a car fare is per vehicle. That single fact decides most family and group trips. For one traveller, one train ticket compared with one car fare favours the train on cost. For a family of four, four tickets plus a taxi from Union to the hotel looks very different, and for a group of eight, one twelve-seat Sprinter means everyone leaves together, the bags travel in one place and nobody is left on a platform. We do not print fares, ours or anyone else's, because they change and depend on the trip; UP Express fares are on its own site, and ours appear in the reservation engine before you confirm. What we can say is that the per-party comparison, not the per-person one, is the honest way to decide. Our Sprinter group transportation page covers larger parties.
Terminal 1 or Terminal 3: why it changes the answer
The UP Express station is attached to Terminal 1. Passengers arriving at or leaving from Terminal 3 first ride the airport's inter-terminal train between the two terminals, then walk to the UP Express platform. With a backpack that is a minor detour; with two children, a car seat and three suitcases after an overnight flight it is a real effort. Taxis, rideshare and pre-booked cars serve both terminals directly. So if your flight uses Terminal 3, the balance tilts towards a road option, and if it uses Terminal 1 and you are travelling light to Union, the balance tilts towards the train. Airlines are split between the terminals and assignments can change, so check your booking. Our Pearson terminal pickup guide explains each terminal in more detail.
Late nights, early mornings and storm days
Timing changes the comparison. Trains run to a timetable, and the first and last departures of the day do not line up with every flight, so check the current schedule on the operator's site before relying on it for a dawn departure or a midnight landing. Taxi queues can be long when several delayed flights land together late at night, and rideshare availability thins out at unusual hours. A pre-booked car is dispatched to the actual landing time, whenever that is, and waits for 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US flights or 60 minutes on other international arrivals, counted from landing. On storm days the train's dedicated track is an advantage while highways crawl, but platforms and connections are exposed to the weather; a car that is already waiting at the curb, with winter tires from November to April, takes that uncertainty away.
Where does each option pick you up at Pearson?
Each mode has its own place at the terminals, and mixing them up is a common arrival-day mistake:
- UP Express: the Pearson station at Terminal 1, signed inside the terminal.
- Taxis and airport limos: the stands on the arrivals curb, where a dispatcher assigns the next vehicle.
- Rideshare: a separate signed rideshare pickup zone.
- Pre-booked cars like ours: the designated pre-arranged pickup area on the arrivals-level curb; you tell the pickup-area staff you are waiting for a pre-arranged ride and the chauffeur brings the car up.
We do not print door numbers, because signage and zones change; follow the terminal signs and the text your chauffeur sends with the car, plate and exact spot.
Which option suits which traveller?
| Traveller | Our honest recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, carry-on, staying near Union, flying T1 | UP Express | Quick, simple, on its own track |
| Solo, staying in Yorkville or Midtown | Car or taxi | Door to door; the train needs a second leg |
| Couple with two large cases | Pre-booked sedan | Bags in the trunk, no transfers |
| Family of four with car seats | Pre-booked SUV | Child seats fitted in advance, one vehicle |
| Group of seven to twelve | Pre-booked Sprinter | Everyone and every bag together |
| Any Terminal 3 flight with luggage | Pre-booked car | No inter-terminal connection |
| Executive with meetings after landing | Hourly chauffeur | The car stays for the day |
| Walk-up arrival, no plans made | Taxi or limo from the stand | Available without a booking |
Taxi from the stand or a pre-booked limo?
Both are road vehicles licensed for the trip, so the difference is planning rather than legitimacy. A taxi or airport limo from the stand needs no booking, which is ideal when plans change at the last minute. You take the next vehicle in line, its size is whatever arrives, and it does not know your flight. A pre-booked car is dispatched against your flight number, so delays move the pickup automatically, the vehicle class is the one you chose for your party and luggage, the fixed fare is agreed before you fly, and the same desk can handle the return trip. If you are landing with family, a group or a tight schedule, those differences matter. If you are a solo traveller with flexible plans, the stand works well.
When should you choose the UP Express?
We give this advice to our own clients. Choose the train when you are one or two people with bags you can carry easily, your flight uses Terminal 1, and your hotel or office is beside Union Station or one of the other UP stops. Choose it at weekday rush hour, when the highways are slowest and the rail corridor is not. Choose it when the trip is truly airport to Union and nothing else. Our station page for UP Express to Pearson covers the stations and the walk at each end. If any of these conditions fails, especially luggage, Terminal 3, children or a destination away from Union, a pre-booked car is likely the calmer choice, and we are happy to send one.

Can you combine the train and a car?
Yes, and plenty of travellers do. One pattern is the train out and the car home: the UP Express to Terminal 1 on a weekday morning when traffic is at its worst, then a pre-booked car after a late return flight when the thought of a platform and a second leg at midnight is unappealing. Another is a car from a suburban home to Union Station, then the train from there, which some commuters prefer. A third is the reverse for visitors: the train into the city on arrival day, and a car to the airport at the end of a trip when shopping has doubled the luggage. Book whichever leg the car genuinely improves. The Union Station car service page covers pickups at the downtown end.
Business travel: when the airport run becomes an hourly day
For a visiting executive, the airport trip is often only the first leg of the day. Landing at 9:00, a 10:30 meeting on Bay Street, lunch in Yorkville and a site visit in Vaughan is four journeys, and no train or taxi stand solves that. With the hourly chauffeur service, the car meets the flight at Pearson, keeps the luggage locked in the trunk all day, waits outside each meeting and returns the traveller to Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 for the evening flight. The minimum is three hours for sedans, SUVs and Sprinters, with extra time in 30-minute blocks. Assistants get one confirmation for the whole day, and the chauffeur has the passenger's flight and phone.
Accessibility, children and help with bags
Travellers who need help with mobility often find the road options easier than platforms, escalators and an inter-terminal train. Our chauffeurs fold and stow a wheelchair or walker for passengers who can transfer to a seat; we have a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for anyone who must stay seated in a wheelchair or scooter, available when booked in advance. Airlines arrange assistance from the aircraft to the curb when you request it in advance. For children, infant, convertible and booster seats are available at booking and fitted before the car reaches the terminal. A chauffeur loading strollers and car seats while you hold a tired toddler is, for many parents, the whole argument for a car.
