Toronto to Buffalo airport is about 160 km from downtown Toronto to Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), typically 105–135 minutes of driving along the QEW plus the border crossing at the Peace Bridge or the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Every passenger needs valid border documents. TorontoBlackLimousine.com drives it both ways with a fixed all-in fare. Book your Toronto to Buffalo airport car and see the fare first.
Toronto to Buffalo airport: why Torontonians make the trip
Toronto to Buffalo airport is a trip many people in the GTA make several times a year. Buffalo Niagara International, in Cheektowaga just east of the city, offers a different mix of airlines, schedules and routes to US destinations from those at Pearson, and many families heading to Florida, the US sunbelt or connecting through US hubs compare both before booking. Others are Americans working in Toronto who fly home from a domestic airport, or visitors who found the flight that suited them from BUF. Whatever the reason, the trip involves an international border, so it needs a chauffeur and a vehicle that cross it routinely and a dispatcher who times the pickup around the bridge as well as the flight. This page covers the drive both ways.
How far is Buffalo airport from downtown Toronto and Pearson?
Planning figures, excluding time at the border; the reservation engine quotes the exact fixed fare for your address, date, time and vehicle.
| Trip | Distance | Typical drive time (excluding border) |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto / Union Station to BUF | about 160 km | 105–135 min |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to BUF | about 170 km | 110–140 min |
| Mississauga to BUF | about 140 km | 95–120 min |
| Oakville to BUF | about 125 km | 85–105 min |
| Vaughan or Markham to BUF | about 185–195 km | 120–155 min |
| Niagara Falls, Ontario to BUF | about 40 km | 30–40 min |
Add the border: anything from five minutes to well over an hour, depending on the day and the bridge. The next sections explain how we plan it.
Which road and which bridge: Peace Bridge or Lewiston-Queenston?
The Canadian half is the same as any Niagara trip: the Gardiner or the 427 onto the QEW, around the lake through Burlington, Hamilton and St. Catharines. Then the chauffeur chooses a crossing. The Peace Bridge at the end of the QEW in Fort Erie lands on Buffalo's west side, and the I-190 and the Kensington Expressway lead east to the airport. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge north of Niagara Falls is reached on Highway 405; from Lewiston the car takes the I-190 across Grand Island and on towards the airport. The Rainbow Bridge in the middle of Niagara Falls is used less often for this trip because it runs through the tourist district. The choice depends on the posted wait times at the moment the car reaches St. Catharines, and the chauffeur makes it then, not at pickup.
How much time does the border add?
It varies more than anything else on the trip. Weekday late mornings and early afternoons are often quick. Friday afternoons into the US, Sunday afternoons back into Canada, long weekends on both sides and US holiday weekends are slow. Summer is busier than winter. Big events in Buffalo, such as Bills games, fill the southbound lanes on game day. Both bridge operators post live wait times, and the Canada Border Services Agency publishes border wait times for the return. We plan a default of 30 minutes for the crossing and add more at the known busy times. If all passengers hold NEXUS cards, the car can use the NEXUS lane where it is open; every person in the vehicle must be a member for that.
What documents does every passenger need?
Everyone in the car, including children, needs documents for the United States and for re-entry to Canada.
- Canadian citizens: a valid passport, or a NEXUS card.
- US citizens: a passport, passport card, NEXUS card or another document accepted under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
- Everyone else: a passport and whatever the United States requires for your nationality, which can include a visa and an I-94 record; and the right document to return to Canada, such as a permanent resident card or visa.
Check U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency before travel; rules change and the officer decides. Do not carry cannabis across the border in either direction, even if it was bought legally in Ontario. Our guide on crossing the border by limo explains what to have ready.
What happens at the border booth in our car?
The chauffeur pulls up to the primary inspection booth and lowers the windows. The officer usually asks for everyone's documents together, and may ask each passenger where they are going, how long they will be in the United States and what they are carrying. Answer directly and keep the documents in hand, not in a suitcase in the trunk. Occasionally a car is sent to secondary inspection for a closer look; it is routine and simply adds time. Our chauffeurs cross these bridges often and know the drill, which takes a lot of the stress out of the booth for first-time travellers. On the way home, the same happens at the Canadian booth, with questions about what you bought and how long you were away.
When should you leave Toronto for a flight from Buffalo?
We work it out like this:
- Take the airline's recommended arrival time at BUF: often two hours for domestic US flights and three for international.
- Add 105–135 minutes of driving from downtown Toronto (110–140 from Pearson).
- Add 30 minutes for the border on a normal day, 60 or more on a Friday, a holiday weekend or a Bills game day.
- Add 15–30 minutes of weather buffer from November to March.
For a 14:00 flight to Florida on a February Saturday, that usually means leaving downtown Toronto around 07:30. Dispatch will suggest a time when you book and adjust it if the forecast turns.
Buffalo airport to Toronto: how does the pickup work on the way home?
Give us your flight number. We track it and dispatch the chauffeur from Toronto against the real arrival time, so a delay moves the pickup with no charge. The chauffeur waits at the BUF arrivals curb or at the location the airport designates for pre-arranged ground transportation on the day, and texts you the car, plate and spot. Curbside pickup is what the fare includes; a name-board meet & greet in the arrivals area is an optional add-on at booking. Included waiting starts at actual landing: 30 minutes for US and Canadian domestic flights, 60 minutes for other international arrivals, then 15-minute blocks. Then it is the bridge, the QEW and home, about two to two and a half hours in total. The Buffalo airport page and the Buffalo to Toronto page go into more detail on the Buffalo side.
Toronto to Buffalo airport shuttle, bus, taxi or chauffeur?
There is no UP Express or GO train to Buffalo airport, so the options look different from a Pearson trip. Without prices:
| Option | Time from Toronto | Comfort | Luggage | Door to door? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intercity coach (e.g. Megabus, FlixBus) | Scheduled, with stops; check the timetable | Coach seat | Under-floor bags | No: terminal to airport or downtown Buffalo |
| GO or VIA to Niagara Falls, then a cross-border taxi | Long, with a change and a second border car | Mixed | Hard | No |
| Shared airport shuttle | Longer, with stops for other passengers | Van seat | Usually fine | Sometimes |
| Toronto taxi or app ride | 105–135 min plus the border, if a driver accepts it | Varies | Depends on car | Yes, if available |
| Private chauffeur | 105–135 min plus the border | Quiet black car | Vehicle chosen in advance | Yes, flight-tracked |
Many app drivers and taxis decline cross-border trips, so it is not something to rely on for a flight. A pre-booked car is the dependable choice when the plane will not wait.
Who books the Toronto–Buffalo airport car?
Families heading south in winter who found the right flight out of Buffalo and do not want to leave a car in a US parking lot for two weeks. Snowbirds with a season's worth of luggage. Americans working in Toronto flying home for the holidays. Business travellers with meetings in western New York who fly out afterwards. Sports fans on their way to or from a game day. And visitors from abroad who flew into Buffalo and are spending their holiday in Toronto and Niagara. For groups and families, one vehicle across the border is simpler than coordinating several documents across several rides.
What stops can you make on the way?
Common stops include collecting another passenger in Oakville, Burlington or Hamilton, which sit right on the QEW; a coffee and washroom break in the Niagara Region before the bridge; and the duty-free shops at the bridge plazas for travellers leaving Canada. On the way home, some passengers ask for a stop in Niagara Falls or Niagara-on-the-Lake before continuing to Toronto. Add planned stops in the reservation engine so they are included in the fixed fare. Remember that anything bought in the United States has to be declared at the Canadian booth.
Game days, shopping and meetings: when does the hourly chauffeur win?
For a straight airport run, a one-way transfer is right. When the day in Buffalo has several parts, the hourly chauffeur service is simpler: one car and chauffeur from a three-hour minimum, extra time in 30-minute blocks, waiting at each stop. It suits a Bills game (see our Buffalo Bills games page), a shopping day in western New York, meetings in Buffalo followed by a late flight, or a family drop at the airport followed by a return to Toronto with the car. For a cross-border day with a group, a Sprinter keeps everyone and their documents together at the booth. Our cross-border limo service page covers longer US trips.
Winter, lake-effect snow and the QEW
Western New York is famous for lake-effect snow, and bands of it can close roads south of Buffalo while the airport a few kilometres away stays open. The QEW near Grimsby and Stoney Creek also catches squalls off Lake Ontario. Our cars run winter tires from November to April, dispatch checks the forecasts on both sides of the border before departure, and the chauffeur will leave earlier rather than rush. If a storm threatens your flight, check with the airline and the Buffalo Niagara International website, and message us: moving a pickup is easy, missing a flight is not.
Bringing purchases back into Canada
On the way home, every passenger must declare goods bought or received outside Canada, and the personal exemption allowance depends on how long you have been away. The CBSA explains the rules on its declaring goods page. Keep receipts together and know roughly what you bought; the Canadian booth moves faster when answers are clear. Alcohol and tobacco have their own limits. The chauffeur cannot declare for you, but will make sure the bags come out of the trunk if the officer asks to see them.
Which vehicle suits a Buffalo airport trip?
Two travellers with two cases fit a business sedan or the first-class sedan. Families and snowbirds with golf bags and big suitcases book the SUV or the premier luxury SUV, each seating six with four bags. Groups of seven use the executive Sprinter, and teams of up to twelve the Sprinter luxury van. Over two hours of driving plus a border crossing, space matters: if the luggage list is long, size up one class.
Buffalo airport parking or a private car?
Driving yourself means paying for parking at BUF for the length of the trip, crossing the border twice at the wheel, and driving home tired after the flight. A private car removes all three and lets everyone sleep on the way back. For a short trip with one traveller, driving can make sense; for families, long holidays and winter travel, a chauffeur is usually the calmer choice. Our blog compares the two in detail: Buffalo airport parking vs a cross-border car and flying out of Buffalo from Toronto.
What does the fixed fare include?
Cross-border fares are never printed on this site; the reservation engine shows the exact all-in fare for your trip before you confirm. It bundles the chauffeur, the vehicle, fuel, 407 ETR tolls if used, airport fees and the gratuity, and shows HST separately. No meter runs while the car sits in the bridge queue, and there is no surge. What changes the fare: the vehicle class, the addresses, the date and time, stops, waiting beyond the included time, and add-ons such as meet & greet or child seats. Hourly trips are priced on hours kept, from the three-hour minimum. The fares page walks through each element.
