A Thousand Islands tour from Toronto by private car covers about 290 km each way, typically 3 to 3.5 hours on the 401 from downtown to Gananoque. TorontoBlackLimousine.com keeps one chauffeur with you for the cruise, lunch and the Thousand Islands Parkway, or drives you one-way for an overnight stay. The reservation engine shows the fixed fare before you book.
Thousand Islands tour from Toronto: distance, drive time and how the day works
The Thousand Islands are a scatter of granite islands in the St. Lawrence River where it leaves Lake Ontario, and the Canadian gateway is the town of Gananoque, about 290 km east of Union Station. Our planning figure is 3 to 3.5 hours on the 401, which makes a day trip possible but long. Most clients use one of two plans: an early start with the chauffeur kept by the hour for a cruise, lunch and a scenic drive, then home in the evening, or a one-way drive for a night or two in Gananoque, Rockport or Brockville with a separate pickup later. You can book your Thousand Islands car from Toronto now; the reservation engine prices your exact addresses, date and vehicle and shows the fixed fare before you confirm.
Distance and drive-time table for the Thousand Islands
| From / to | Distance | Typical drive time | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto to Gananoque | about 290 km | 3 h to 3 h 30 min | Gardiner or DVP, 401 east |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to Gananoque | about 305 km | 3 h 10 min to 3 h 45 min | 427 or 409, 401 east |
| Downtown Toronto to Kingston | about 260 km | 2 h 45 min to 3 h 15 min | 401 east |
| Gananoque to the Thousand Islands Bridge (Hill Island) | about 20 km | 20 to 25 min | Thousand Islands Parkway |
| Gananoque to Brockville | about 50 km | 40 to 50 min | Parkway or 401 |
| Gananoque to Ottawa | about 150 km | 1 h 45 min to 2 h | 401, 416 |
All figures are typical and measured to the Gananoque waterfront. The eastbound 401 through Pickering, Ajax and Whitby is the slowest part of the trip on weekday mornings, so a 7 a.m. departure is common.
Planning a Thousand Islands day trip from Toronto hour by hour
A realistic one-day plan looks like this:
- 7:00 Pickup at your Toronto home or hotel. Coffee on board, the city behind you before the worst of the eastbound traffic.
- 8:30 to 9:00 Short stop at an ONroute on the 401, Trenton or Napanee.
- 10:15 to 10:30 Arrive at the Gananoque waterfront. Tickets in hand for a late-morning cruise.
- 11:00 to 12:30 River cruise among the islands.
- 12:45 to 14:15 Lunch in town.
- 14:30 to 15:30 Drive the Thousand Islands Parkway east, with photo stops at the lookouts.
- 16:00 Head west on the 401 for home, arriving in Toronto around 19:30 to 20:00.
That is a 12 to 13 hour day, which is why we sell it as an hourly booking with the chauffeur waiting throughout. The hourly chauffeur in Toronto page explains the minimums and 30-minute blocks.
Cruises, the islands and Boldt Castle
The classic way to see the islands is from the water. Cruise operators run sightseeing boats from Gananoque and nearby Rockport through the summer and early autumn, with routes that thread between cottages perched on tiny rocks, the islands of Thousand Islands National Park and the stretch of river on the US side. Boldt Castle, the island mansion that appears on so many postcards, stands on Heart Island in US waters near Alexandria Bay, New York. Any cruise or visit that lands passengers there involves entering the United States, so every traveller needs the right documents; check with the cruise operator which sailings stop and what they require. Cruise schedules and seasons change every year, so we recommend buying tickets before the day and telling us the sailing time so we can plan the drive around it. Visit 1000 Islands lists local operators and events.

Crossing to the US side at the Thousand Islands Bridge
The Thousand Islands Bridge links Hill Island near Lansdowne, Ontario, with Wellesley Island and Interstate 81 in New York, about 20 minutes east of Gananoque. Some clients want to see Alexandria Bay or Clayton by road, or to continue to Syracuse or beyond. Our chauffeurs cross regularly, but every passenger needs a valid passport, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced licence where eligible, both to enter the US and to come back into Canada; review the rules at the Canada Border Services Agency and US Customs and Border Protection before booking a cross-border day. Border waits on summer weekends can be long in both directions, so a cross-border plan needs a generous time buffer. Our crossing the border by limo guide walks through the details, and Syracuse to Toronto covers the onward drive.
The Thousand Islands Parkway: the scenic drive between Gananoque and Brockville
Between Gananoque and Brockville, the Thousand Islands Parkway runs beside the river instead of inland like the 401. It is a slower, prettier road with lookouts, small beaches, a recreational trail alongside and views across to the islands. With the chauffeur kept by the hour, a drive along the Parkway fills the afternoon naturally, with stops wherever you like: a lookout, an ice cream stand, a winery or a short walk. In early October the hardwoods along the river turn colour and the Parkway becomes one of the best autumn drives in eastern Ontario. Brockville, at the far end, has a riverfront and a historic railway tunnel that makes a short, interesting stop.
Rest stops on the 401 east
The eastbound 401 has ONroute service centres at Newcastle, Port Hope, Trenton, Napanee, Odessa and Mallorytown (ONroute). On a Thousand Islands trip the chauffeur usually stops once on the way out, at Port Hope, Trenton or Napanee, and once on the way home. If you would prefer a coffee in a real town, Cobourg's waterfront and downtown Belleville are a few minutes off the highway, and we add the time to the booking. For guests with mobility concerns we can plan stops closer together and use the service centres with the easiest access.
Kingston first, or the islands first?
Kingston is 30 km before Gananoque, so the two pair naturally. Fort Henry, the limestone downtown and the waterfront make a full morning, and some clients spend the night in Kingston and do the islands the next day. Our Toronto to Kingston car service and the Kingston city page cover the city itself; Visit Kingston lists attractions. A two-day plan might be Toronto to Kingston on day one with an afternoon at the fort and dinner downtown, then Gananoque and a cruise on day two before the drive home. The chauffeur stays overnight nearby and is rested for the return.
Choosing a vehicle for a Thousand Islands tour
- Couples: a first-class sedan (Mercedes S-Class or equivalent) is the quietest place to spend six hours of highway.
- Families of up to six: the Premier luxury SUV or a Yukon XL or Suburban SUV, with space for coolers, jackets and a stroller.
- Groups of seven to twelve: the Executive Sprinter or the Sprinter luxury van, popular for birthday outings, office team days and extended family trips.
- Larger groups: a 55-seat coach is arranged through our partner network and priced in writing by a coordinator.
Toronto to the Thousand Islands: train, bus, rental or chauffeur?
| Option | How it works | Door to door? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIA Rail | Toronto to Kingston or Brockville on the corridor trains, then a taxi or local transfer to the river | No | Solo travellers staying in one town |
| Intercity bus | Coach to Kingston, then a local connection | No | Budget travel, light luggage |
| Coach tour | Scheduled group tour on set dates with fixed stops | Partly | Travellers happy with a fixed itinerary |
| Rental car | Drive about 580 km round trip yourself | Yes | Confident drivers who enjoy the 401 |
| Private chauffeur | One car, your schedule, your stops, both directions | Yes | Couples, families, groups, visitors from abroad |
Scheduled coach tours from Toronto run in season and suit many people well; the private car suits those who want their own timing, a later start, a specific cruise or a stop that the group tour does not make.

- Photographers and painters chasing the October colour and the morning mist on the river.

Overnight in Gananoque: one-way or round trip with the chauffeur staying
For a weekend on the river, the simplest booking is a one-way drive out on Friday and a separate pickup on Sunday afternoon, each with its own fixed fare. If you would like the car available during the stay for dinners in Kingston, a Parkway drive or a trip to the bridge, the chauffeur can stay nearby and the car is booked by the day. A coordinator confirms that kind of multi-day plan in writing, including the chauffeur's lodging. Either way, the same Toronto dispatch desk handles every leg, and the private chauffeur service page explains how extended bookings work.

Seasons on the river: summer, fall colours and quiet winters
The Thousand Islands are busiest from late June through Labour Day, when cruises run often, accommodation fills and the 401 east is slow on Friday afternoons. September and early October are, for many, the best time: smaller crowds, cool mornings and brilliant colour along the Parkway, although some cruise schedules thin out after Thanksgiving. Winters are quiet, many seasonal businesses close, and snow squalls off Lake Ontario can slow the 401 near Kingston; our cars run winter tires from November to April, and we check road conditions before every departure.
Pearson arrivals heading straight to the river
Some visitors land at Pearson and go straight to a riverside inn. We track the flight, allow 30 minutes of included waiting after Canadian and US landings and 60 minutes after other international arrivals, and meet you at Pearson's arrivals-level pre-arranged pickup area; meet and greet inside with a name board is available at booking. From the terminal the chauffeur uses the 409 or 427 to the 401 eastbound and is clear of the airport quickly. See Toronto Pearson airport transfers for terminal details, and our travel desk for flights and hotel stays built around the trip.
