A private car to Buffalo airport from Toronto covers about 160 km and 105 to 135 minutes of driving from downtown to Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), plus the border crossing. It pays off most for families and groups sharing one fixed fare, early departures and late returns. Every passenger needs valid border documents.
A private car to Buffalo airport from Toronto: when does it actually pay off?
When the flight saving is real and the party is more than one person. Toronto travellers fly from Buffalo for lower fares on some US routes, for a direct flight that Pearson does not offer, or to start a US trip after crossing by road. The drive is the price of that saving: QEW to the Niagara frontier, a bridge, then the airport in Cheektowaga on the east side of Buffalo. Our Buffalo airport car service page covers the airport, bridges and vehicles in detail; this post is the decision guide and the timing plan. A private car carries your whole party for one fixed fare, so its value grows with every person and every suitcase. A solo traveller with a carry-on may honestly do better with a bus or by flying from Pearson.
How do you tell if Buffalo is worth it for your trip?
Run three numbers before booking the flight:
- The flight difference for every traveller, not just one.
- The ground cost both ways: our fixed fare for each leg from the engine, or parking plus fuel if you drive yourself.
- The time cost: roughly two hours each way plus the border, against about 25 to 45 minutes to Pearson from downtown.
If the flight saving for the whole party comfortably exceeds the ground cost and you can spare the time, Buffalo makes sense. Families of four or five often find it does; a solo business traveller rarely does. If you want the flights compared across Pearson, Hamilton and Buffalo for the same dates, our travel desk can price them.
What are the planning distances and drive times?
| From | To Buffalo airport (BUF) | Typical drive time (excluding border wait) | Usual crossing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto / Union Station | about 160 km | 105-135 min | Peace Bridge or Lewiston-Queenston |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 170 km | 110-140 min | Peace Bridge or Lewiston-Queenston |
| Oakville | about 125 km | 85-105 min | Peace Bridge |
| Burlington | about 110 km | 75-95 min | Peace Bridge |
| Vaughan | about 185 km | 120-150 min | Peace Bridge |
| Markham | about 195 km | 125-155 min | Peace Bridge |
These are planning figures. The chauffeur picks the bridge on the day from posted wait times; the Peace Bridge links Fort Erie and Buffalo, while the Lewiston-Queenston and Rainbow bridges are run by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission.
What does a real departure timeline look like?
Here are two worked examples from the dispatch desk, leaving from downtown Toronto.
A 09:30 Saturday flight to Florida, family of four, checked bags. Airline recommends arriving two hours early, so be at BUF by 07:30. Drive 105 to 135 minutes; add a 45-minute border buffer for a summer Saturday and 15 minutes of general slack. Pickup at about 04:30.
A 14:00 Tuesday flight, two colleagues, carry-on. Be at BUF by 12:00. Drive about two hours; a quiet weekday border buffer of 30 minutes; 15 minutes slack. Pickup at about 09:15.
For Friday afternoons, US or Canadian holiday weekends and Bills game days, use 60 to 90 minutes of border buffer instead. Our post on border wait times from Toronto to Buffalo explains the weekly patterns.

What documents does everyone in the car need?
Each passenger, including children, needs their own valid document. For US entry, Canadian and US citizens generally use a passport, a NEXUS card, a US passport card or an enhanced driver's licence where eligible, under the rules on the CBP Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page. Remember that you will also fly from BUF, and air travel has its own ID rules, so a passport is the simplest choice for everyone. Citizens of other countries need a passport and whatever visa or authorization applies, and those entering by land should read CBP's I-94 page. A minor travelling without both parents should carry a consent letter. Our documents checklist covers the details.
What happens at the bridge on the way down?
Usually nobody leaves the car. At the US booth, the CBP officer asks each passenger for documents and a few questions: citizenship, where you are going, how long you will be away, what you are carrying. Answer for yourself, briefly and truthfully, with documents in hand rather than in a checked bag. Occasionally a car is sent to secondary inspection; passengers may go inside while the chauffeur waits with the vehicle. Never carry cannabis across the border in either direction. NEXUS lanes can only be used if everyone in the vehicle, driver included, holds a card, so do not plan your timing around a NEXUS lane unless you asked about it at booking. Our crossing the border by limo guide explains the booth step by step.
When is a private car better than the other ways to Buffalo?
Compared honestly:
- Driving yourself suits a short trip if you are happy to park in the US and drive home tired. Our post on Buffalo airport parking versus a cross-border car runs that comparison.
- Intercity buses and shared shuttles suit solo travellers with flexible timing, but they run to timetables, stop for others and wait for every passenger at the border.
- A rental car one way brings cross-border and drop-off complications.
- A private car leaves when you need to, goes door to door, carries only your party through the booth, and the fixed fare is known before you travel.
For families, groups, early flights and anyone who needs to work on the way, the private car is the calm option.
What about the return trip from Buffalo?
It is the leg people forget to plan. You land at BUF, often in the evening, and still have a bridge and two hours of QEW ahead. A pre-booked car tracks your flight, waits for you at the terminal's ground transportation area, and included waiting starts at actual landing: 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US flights. At the Canadian booth, each passenger declares what they are bringing in; the CBSA declaration guidance explains how. Keep receipts together in a carry-on. Our duty-free allowance guide explains the categories in plain language.
Which vehicle suits the Buffalo run?
The trip is long, so comfort counts:
- Business sedan for two people and two large cases.
- First-class sedan for an executive who will work in the back seat.
- SUV for a family of up to six with luggage; our most common vehicle on this run.
- Executive Sprinter for a group of seven with bags, such as friends flying south together.
At the border every passenger is inspected, so one larger vehicle is usually quicker than two cars through two booths. Child seats are available at booking.
What changes in winter?
Western New York is known for lake-effect snow, and bands can be heavy south and east of Buffalo while Toronto stays dry. The QEW along the Niagara Peninsula catches squalls too. Our cars run winter tires from November to April, chauffeurs check road conditions on both sides of the border, and on storm days we move pickups earlier. If your flight is cancelled or rebooked, message us the new flight and we move the booking. On the Canadian side, Ontario 511 carries QEW closures; on a serious weather day, extra time is the only safe plan.

Can you combine the airport run with a day in Buffalo?
Yes, and the hourly chauffeur crosses the border too. Some travellers fly into Buffalo, hold meetings in the city or Amherst, then drive home; others add a shopping stop before the drive back. Our hourly chauffeur service keeps one car and chauffeur from a three-hour minimum, with extra time in 30-minute blocks, and your luggage stays in the vehicle between stops. Football fans use the same logic on game days; see our Buffalo Bills games page.
Which travellers should probably not fly from Buffalo?
Honesty saves everyone time. Buffalo is usually the wrong choice for:
- A solo traveller with a carry-on going somewhere Pearson serves directly; the saving rarely covers the ground trip.
- Anyone without the right documents for every person in the party, including children.
- Travellers on a tight same-day schedule, where a slow bridge can wreck the plan.
- Visitors whose immigration status makes a land crossing complicated; check with the authorities first.
- People flying long-haul internationally, where the connection at a US hub adds its own risk.
For those trips, our Toronto Pearson airport page covers the closer option.
What should you pack in the car rather than the trunk?
At the border, documents and anything you may be asked about should be within reach. Keep in the cabin:
- Every passenger's passport or other accepted document.
- Boarding passes or the airline app, so the officer can see the flight.
- A consent letter for any child not travelling with both parents.
- Medication in its original packaging.
- Receipts for anything bought that you may need to show on the way home.
Everything else can go in the trunk. A prepared car clears the booth in a minute or two; one where passengers hunt through suitcases holds up the whole line.
Why not fly from Niagara Falls airport instead?
Niagara Falls International (IAG), on the New York side of the river, is closer to the bridges but has a smaller, largely leisure schedule that changes by season. If your destination is served from there, it can shorten the drive; check the airline's schedule first. Our Niagara Falls airport page covers the trip. For most destinations and most dates, Buffalo has far more choice, which is why it is the US airport Toronto travellers ask about most.
What does the fare include?
We do not publish prices on this site. The reservation engine shows the fixed, all-in fare before you confirm, with HST shown separately: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, airport fees and gratuity. There is no meter, and a slow border does not raise it. What changes it is the vehicle class, the distance from your address, extra stops, waiting beyond the included time at the airport, and the date. Our cross-border limo service page covers other US destinations on the same basis.
