The documents to cross the US-Canada border by car depend on who you are. Canadian and US adults use a passport or NEXUS card; children under 16 who are Canadian or US citizens may use a birth certificate at land crossings. Permanent residents and visitors need a passport, a US visa or ESTA where required, and valid status to return to Canada. Check CBP and CBSA before travel.
A chauffeured trip from Toronto to Buffalo, Niagara Falls NY or Detroit fails for one reason more than any other: a passenger with the wrong document. Our crossing the border by limo guide explains how the crossing works and what to declare. This post goes person by person through the car, because a family, a sales team or a wedding party is rarely made up of people with the same passport.

What documents to cross the US-Canada border does each person need?
Two separate checks apply. Entering the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides what is acceptable. Coming back into Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency decides, and its travel documents page lists what it accepts. A document that gets you into the US is not automatically enough to get you home: a visitor's Canadian status, for example, is a separate question. So every passenger needs an answer for both directions before the car leaves Toronto.
Here is the summary, followed by the detail for each type of traveller:
| Passenger | Entering the US by land | Returning to Canada by land |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian citizen, 16 or older | Passport, NEXUS card or enhanced licence where issued | Same document; passport is simplest |
| Canadian citizen under 16 | Passport, or proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate | Same document; consent letter if one parent is absent |
| US citizen | US passport, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced licence | US passport or other accepted document |
| Canadian permanent resident | Passport of citizenship plus US visa or ESTA as required | PR card or permanent resident travel document, with passport |
| Visitor, visa-exempt for the US | Passport plus an approved ESTA | Passport; valid status to re-enter Canada |
| Visitor needing a US visa | Passport with a valid US visa | Passport and a valid Canadian visa that allows re-entry |
| NEXUS member | NEXUS card (passport recommended) | NEXUS card |
What does a Canadian adult need?
A valid Canadian passport works everywhere and is what we recommend. Under the US Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which CBP explains here, Canadian citizens arriving by land may also use a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's licence where their province issues one. A regular driver's licence and a health card are not enough.
Check the expiry date the week before. A passport that runs out next month still works for a day trip, but if your plan might stretch into a multi-day stay or a flight, renew early.
What do Canadian children need?
Canadian children under 16 travelling by land may present proof of citizenship, such as an original or certified birth certificate, instead of a passport. Teenagers 16 and over follow the adult rules. A passport is still the cleanest choice: it removes any doubt, and it is required if the trip might turn into a flight.
If a child is travelling with only one parent, with grandparents, or with a team or school group, carry a signed consent letter from the parent or parents who are not there. The Government of Canada publishes a consent letter template. Officers on either side may ask for it, and a separated or divorced parent may also need custody papers.

What does a US citizen living in Toronto need?
Americans living or working in Toronto cross often for family visits and Bills games. To enter the US by land, a US passport, a US passport card, a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's licence from a state that issues one will do. To return to Canada, they need a document Canada accepts plus proof of their Canadian status if they live here, such as a work or study permit or a permanent resident card. Carry the permit, not a photo of it.
What does a Canadian permanent resident need?
This is the passenger most often caught out. A permanent resident card is not a travel document for entering the United States. A permanent resident needs the passport of their country of citizenship and, depending on that country, either a US visa or an approved ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program.
Coming home, the CBSA officer expects a valid PR card or a permanent resident travel document along with the passport. If the PR card has expired or is about to, check the IRCC site via the Government of Canada immigration portal well before the trip rather than finding out at the booth.
What does a European or other visa-exempt visitor need?
Many visitors to Toronto, from the UK, most of the EU, Australia, Japan and other Visa Waiver Program countries, add a day in Buffalo or Niagara Falls NY. They need their passport and an approved ESTA: CBP has required ESTA for Visa Waiver travellers entering by land since October 2022, the same as by air. CBP may also issue an I-94 record; its I-94 page explains how to apply in advance online.
Coming back into Canada by car, visa-exempt visitors do not need an electronic travel authorization; the eTA applies to air travel. They do need to still be admissible and within the stay Canada granted them. Keep your return flight details handy in case the officer asks.
What about visitors who need a US visa?
Travellers from countries that are not in the Visa Waiver Program need a valid US visa in their passport before reaching the bridge. There is no way to get one at the booth. They must also be able to return to Canada. Canadian rules let some visitors come back from a short US trip within the stay they were first granted, but the conditions are specific, so check the Canadian visa's dates and entries against IRCC guidance before booking a US day.
Does a NEXUS card replace a passport?
At land crossings, a NEXUS card is an accepted document for its holder in both directions, and the CBSA NEXUS page explains the programme. Carry the passport as well if the trip might involve a flight. NEXUS lanes are another matter: the car may use one only when everyone inside, chauffeur included, is a member. If every passenger holds NEXUS, ask at booking for a NEXUS-holding chauffeur, available on request. Our post on NEXUS at Pearson covers how membership helps at the airport.
Can a past conviction stop someone crossing?
Yes, in either direction, and it surprises people. A past criminal conviction, including an old impaired-driving offence, can make a person inadmissible to the United States or to Canada. A US citizen with a past drunk-driving conviction, for example, can be refused entry to Canada even for a day. If anyone in the party has a record, they should check with the relevant agency long before the trip; nothing can be resolved at the booth on the day.
What should everyone carry besides the main document?
- Prescription medicines in their labelled containers, with a copy of the prescription for anything unusual.
- Receipts for purchases, kept together for the return.
- Proof of the trip's purpose for business travellers: a meeting confirmation or letter.
- Event tickets on a phone with battery left.
- Return flight details for visitors flying home from Toronto.
Never carry cannabis across the border, even though it is legal in Ontario.
What should the passenger list in the booking look like?
When you book a cross-border car, put a short list in the notes: first names, citizenship, NEXUS yes or no, and any children with a note on who they are travelling with. You do not need to send passport numbers. The dispatcher uses it to plan the crossing and to flag obvious problems, such as a permanent resident without an ESTA or a teenager without a consent letter, a day ahead rather than at the bridge.
How do documents change the plan for a family day in Niagara Falls NY?
Take a family of five from Etobicoke: two Canadian parents, a grandmother from India who holds Canadian permanent residence, and two children aged 8 and 15. The parents use passports. The children can use birth certificates at the land crossing, but the family brings passports for them anyway. The grandmother needs her Indian passport with a valid US visa, plus her PR card for the return. One missing visa would end the US side of the day, so it is checked a month ahead. With documents settled, an SUV and a 10-hour booking with our hourly chauffeur service covers the falls, lunch and the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls before home.

What about business travellers and sales teams?
Business visitors entering the US should be ready to explain the purpose of the trip: a meeting, a conference or a site visit. Carry an invitation or agenda for anything beyond a simple meeting, and do not carry goods for sale without checking the rules. Teams often mix citizenships, so the passenger list in the booking matters even more. For a day of meetings in Buffalo or Rochester, the chauffeur stays with the team on an hourly booking. See our corporate car service page for company accounts and invoices.
How long before the trip should documents be checked?
- A month ahead for anything that needs an application: a passport renewal, a US visa, a PR travel document.
- Two weeks ahead for ESTA approvals and consent letters.
- The night before for a final check that every document is packed in a handbag or jacket, not a suitcase.
If the trip includes a flight home or onward from a US airport, our travel desk can arrange flights and hotels around the drive. For the airport side, read flying out of Buffalo from Toronto.
What happens next once documents are sorted?
Choose the crossing and the timing.
