CNE 2026 ran from Friday 21 August to Labour Day, Monday 7 September 2026, at Exhibition Place, about 4 km and 10–20 minutes from Union Station and 25 km, 25–40 minutes, from Pearson. Instead of hunting for paid parking, families booked a chauffeured drop at a gate and a timed or hourly pickup. The 2027 fair is listed for 20 August to 6 September. Book your day.
The Canadian National Exhibition is one of the oldest fairs in North America, and every year the same scene plays out on the Gardiner exits: cars queuing for lots that are already full. This post looks back at CNE 2026 from the dispatch desk, with real day plans for a family, grandparents and a group of teenagers, and the lessons that apply to the 2027 Ex. For gates, vehicles and the year-round service, start with our CNE limo and black car page.
When did CNE 2026 run, and what were the hours?
CNE 2026 ran for 18 days, from Friday 21 August to Monday 7 September, closing on Labour Day as it always does. Published hours were gates open 10 am to 10 pm with the grounds open until midnight on most days, and shorter hours on Labour Day itself, when gates closed at 5 pm and the grounds at 9 pm. Those hours shape the car plan: arrivals spread over the whole morning and afternoon, but departures bunch up at 10 pm, after fireworks and at midnight. The fair's official site, theex.com, lists the 2027 edition as 20 August to 6 September 2027; dates are set by the organisers, so confirm them before booking.
Why was parking the biggest headache of the 2026 Ex?
Exhibition Place lots are paid and fill on weekends, on the air show weekend and on fireworks nights, and the queues to enter them back onto Lake Shore Boulevard and the Gardiner ramps. Then the exit at closing time repeats the problem in reverse. A family that drives spends the first and last hour of the day in a car park, the driver skips the beer garden, and somebody carries a sleeping child across a dark lot. A chauffeured drop at the gate, with the car leaving immediately, takes all of that away. Exhibition Place posts its own parking and access notices for each event.
How far is the Ex from home, hotel and airport?
| From | Distance to Exhibition Place | Typical summer drive | Usual gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Union Station / downtown hotels | about 4 km | 10–20 min | Princes' Gates (east) |
| Yorkville and Midtown | about 8 km | 15–25 min | Princes' Gates |
| Mississauga City Centre | about 27 km | 30–45 min | Dufferin Gate (west) |
| Oakville | about 36 km | 30–45 min | Dufferin Gate |
| Vaughan | about 33 km | 35–50 min | either, by traffic |
| Markham | about 35 km | 35–50 min | Princes' Gates |
| Brampton | about 42 km | 40–55 min | Dufferin Gate |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 25 km | 25–40 min | Dufferin Gate |
Typical planning figures; the reservation engine quotes the exact fixed fare for your address, date and vehicle. The last kilometre, at the Jameson and Strachan exits and on Lake Shore in front of the grounds, is what stretches the time on busy days.
What did a family day from Mississauga look like?
A family of five, two children under eight, on a Saturday in late August 2026:
- 10:15 am pickup in an SUV with two boosters fitted; child seats are available at booking.
- 10:50 am drop near the Dufferin Gate; the chauffeur leaves immediately.
- 11:00 am to 4:30 pm midway rides, the Food Building and the farm exhibits.
- 4:30 pm the parents text "heading out"; pickup at the agreed corner at 4:45.
- 5:25 pm home before the evening crowd arrives.
Because the family knew they would stay six hours, they booked a one-way drop and a separate timed pickup, rather than paying for hours of waiting. Families staying only three or four hours, or who want to leave whenever the children are done, are better on the hourly chauffeur service, where the car is always ten minutes away.
How did grandparents and guests with mobility needs manage?
The grounds are large, and the walk from a distant lot is often what stops older visitors coming at all. A sedan drops them at the gate closest to where they want to start, and the chauffeur walks them to the entrance if they like. For guests who can transfer to a seat, the chauffeur folds and stows a wheelchair or walker; for a guest who stays in a wheelchair or scooter, we have a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, booked in advance with the chair described at booking. A three or four hour visit on an hourly booking means grandparents can leave the moment they are tired. Our post on transportation for elderly parents in Toronto has more detail.
How did parents handle teenagers going with friends?
Teenagers wanted the Ex without parents, and parents wanted them home safely. The pattern that worked: a one-way drop for the group at noon, a timed pickup at 9:30 pm at a named corner, and dispatch holding each teen's mobile number. The chauffeur texted the meet point and waited until everyone on the list was aboard, then dropped each friend at home. Parents asked for a text at each drop-off, which dispatch arranges at booking.
Hourly, one-way or timed return: which suited which visitor?
| Visitor | Booking | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Family, 3–4 hours | Hourly | leave the moment the children are done |
| Family, full day | Drop plus timed pickup | no paying for long waiting |
| Grandparents | Hourly, sedan | gate drop and an early exit on demand |
| Teen group | Drop plus timed pickup | fixed meet time, every name checked |
| Fireworks night | Timed pickup with buffer | the exit crowd takes 30–45 minutes to clear |
| Group of 10–12 | Sprinter, hourly | one meet point keeps everyone together |
Sedans, SUVs and Sprinters carry a 3-hour minimum, with extra time in 30-minute blocks.
What happened on air show and fireworks nights?
The Canadian International Air Show traditionally flies over the waterfront on Labour Day weekend, and fireworks nights draw the biggest evening crowds of the fair. On those days Lake Shore and the Gardiner near the grounds slowed earliest, and the exit after the fireworks took the longest. The fix was timing and distance: book the pickup 30 minutes after the fireworks end, and meet a block or two north of the grounds rather than at the gate. Check the official CNE schedule for the air show and fireworks dates each year.
What were the common mistakes at the 2026 Ex?
- Driving in on the air show weekend and spending the first hour in a lot queue.
- Choosing the meet point at the gate. Every taxi and ride-hail car is there too; walk a block.
- No plan for the last hour. Agree the pickup time before you go in, and text when you start walking.
- Forgetting other events. A Toronto FC match at BMO Field, a concert at the RBC Amphitheatre or a Blue Jays game on the same night fills the same roads.
- Over-sized vehicles for small groups. A party bus for six means a longer walk to where it can stop.
- No water or sunscreen. Late August on the midway is hot; the car is the cool-down point on an hourly booking.
Was the TTC or GO a better way to the Ex?
For many visitors, yes, and we say so. Exhibition GO station on the Lakeshore West line is next to the grounds, and the TTC serves both ends with streetcar loops. A couple or a family living near a Lakeshore West stop can ride in quickly; check GO Transit and the TTC for event-day service. After fireworks the platforms are crowded. A car wins for families with small children and strollers, for groups from away from the rail lines, for older guests and for anyone who wants to leave together on their own schedule.
Did anyone take a party bus or Sprinter to the CNE?
Birthday groups, sports teams and extended families did. Up to twelve fit our Sprinter luxury van, which stages close to the grounds and keeps everyone together. Larger groups used a party bus from a vetted partner operator in the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network, with a 4–5 hour minimum and pricing in writing from a coordinator. Our Sprinter group transportation page explains seating and luggage.
Where should out-of-town visitors stay for the 2027 Ex?
The closest rooms are near the grounds and in the waterfront hotels, with the Entertainment District a short drive east. Visitors flying in can book the car with their flight number; the chauffeur meets them at Pearson's pre-arranged pickup area on the arrivals curb of Terminal 1 or 3, with meet and greet inside arrivals available at booking. Our travel desk books flights and hotels on the same itinerary as the car.
What else is on near Exhibition Place in late summer?
The CNE shares its season with the waterfront's busiest weeks. Concerts at the lakeside amphitheatre, matches at BMO Field and events in the Enercare Centre all draw crowds to the same few roads. Our post on getting home from an RBC Amphitheatre (formerly Budweiser Stage) concert covers the amphitheatre exit, and the Caribana 2026 transport plan covers carnival weekend on the same grounds earlier in August. The Enercare Centre and Exhibition Place venue page has distances for trade shows held there the rest of the year.
How should you plan for CNE 2027?
- Confirm the dates on the official site; the 2027 fair is listed for 20 August to 6 September.
- Pick your day, then book the car the same week you buy admission.
- Avoid the air show weekend and fireworks nights if you want the easiest roads, or book a generous buffer.
- Choose hourly for short visits and a drop plus timed pickup for full days.
- Agree the meet corner with the chauffeur before you go through the gate.
What does the fare include?
We do not publish prices. The reservation engine shows the fixed, all-in fare before you confirm: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, 407 ETR tolls on the planned route and gratuity, with HST shown separately. The vehicle class, distance, hours, extra stops and the date change it. Child seats are available at booking. Cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10 %; 48 hours or less, 50 %; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100 %.
