Porter Airlines flies from Billy Bishop (YTZ) on Toronto Island and also from Toronto Pearson, so check which airport your ticket names. For Billy Bishop, a pre-booked car drops you at the mainland pavilion on Eireann Quay, about 3 to 5 km and 10 to 20 minutes from the Financial District, and meets your return flight there.
Porter Airlines at Billy Bishop: what does a passenger need from ground transport?
Speed at both ends, mostly. Porter Airlines has long been the main operator at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, and its island flights are popular with business travellers heading to Ottawa, Montreal and other short-haul cities, often for the day. That passenger usually carries a laptop bag and maybe a small roller, and their real deadline is a meeting, not a gate. Our Billy Bishop airport car service page covers the airport and the curb in general; this post is written for the Porter flyer specifically: which airport to go to, how to time the car each way, what changes on US flights, and when keeping a chauffeur for the day beats two separate transfers. We are a ground transport company, not the airline, so for schedules, baggage rules and check-in cut-offs, always check Porter's own website and app.
Billy Bishop or Pearson: which airport is your Porter flight?
This is the first thing to check, and the most expensive one to get wrong. Porter flies from the island airport, but it also operates flights from Toronto Pearson, so "flying Porter from Toronto" no longer tells you which airport you need. Your booking confirmation, boarding pass and the airline app all show the departure airport code: YTZ is Billy Bishop, YYZ is Pearson. The two airports are about 30 km and 30 to 50 minutes apart by car, so arriving at the wrong one can mean missing the flight. When you book a car with us, enter the flight number; dispatch checks it against the departure airport too. If your trip uses both airports, our Pearson to Billy Bishop route explains how to time the connection.
How long before a Porter flight should the car collect you?
Work backwards from the airline's check-in and bag-drop cut-off, which you will find on Porter's site:
- Take the airline's recommended arrival time at the terminal for your route.
- Add 10 to 15 minutes for the drop-off on Eireann Quay and the tunnel walk, which the airport says takes under six minutes from curb to check-in.
- Add the drive: 10 to 20 minutes from the Financial District, 15 to 25 from Yorkville, 25 to 40 from North York.
- Add 15 to 20 minutes on weekday evenings, game nights near Rogers Centre or BMO Field, and festival weekends at Exhibition Place.
The common mistake is treating Billy Bishop like a train station because it is close. It is close, but the airline's cut-off still applies.

Where does the car meet you when you land on a Porter flight?
On the mainland, at the pavilion at the foot of Eireann Quay. You walk off the aircraft, through the island terminal, down to the tunnel, across on the moving walkways and up into the pavilion, or you take the 90-second ferry. The airport's pick-up and drop-off rules allow pre-arranged cars to stop at the curb for loading and to use complimentary five-minute spaces in the turning circle, so the chauffeur waits nearby and pulls in as you appear. Included waiting starts at actual landing: 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US flights, 60 minutes on other international arrivals. Most Porter passengers with carry-on reach the curb well within that. Our guide to the Billy Bishop tunnel and pickup point explains the walk in detail.
What changes on a Porter flight to a US city?
Two things, both at the other end. Billy Bishop has no US preclearance facility, so when you fly to a US city from the island you clear US border checks after you land in the United States, not before you leave Toronto. That means the time you need at Billy Bishop is closer to a domestic flight, but your arrival in the US takes longer. Coming home, you land at Billy Bishop from abroad and clear Canadian border processing in the island terminal, so allow for that before you reach the pavilion. Documents are the same as for any US trip: every passenger needs valid identification accepted under US Customs and Border Protection rules for air travel, which for most people means a passport. Our crossing the border by limo guide is about land crossings, but its document notes apply to air travel too.
What do regular Porter passengers usually book with us?
Patterns we see on the island run:
- The Ottawa day return. A car at 06:30 from Rosedale to Eireann Quay, a meeting in Ottawa, the evening flight back, and a car waiting at the pavilion.
- The Montreal client visit. Same shape, sometimes with a colleague collected on the way.
- The visiting executive flying in. Met at the pavilion and kept for the day by the hour.
- The family weekend away. An SUV from the suburbs with car seats fitted, because parking for three nights adds up.
- The late return. The last bank of evening arrivals, when nobody wants to stand in the taxi corral.
For each of these, the booking is the same: enter the flight number and the engine does the rest.
When does keeping a chauffeur for the day beat two transfers?
When the visitor is coming to Toronto rather than leaving it. A Porter passenger flying in from Ottawa or Montreal for a day of meetings is the textbook case for our hourly chauffeur service. The chauffeur meets the flight at the pavilion, drives to the first meeting on Bay Street, waits outside, moves on to a lunch in Yorkville and a site visit in Liberty Village, and returns the guest to Eireann Quay for the evening flight. The minimum is three hours for sedans, SUVs, vans and Sprinters, with extra time in 30-minute blocks, and the guest's overnight bag stays in the trunk. Because Billy Bishop is so close to the core, a surprising share of an hourly day is spent with the car waiting rather than driving, which is exactly what the hourly product is for.
How do the ground options compare for a Porter traveller?
| Option | Getting to YTZ | Getting home after landing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked black car | Door to the pavilion curb, timed to your cut-off | Flight-tracked car at the curb or turning circle | Executives, families, late returns, anyone starting away from Union |
| Hourly chauffeur | Not needed for departures | Car kept for meetings all day | Visitors flying in for a day |
| Free airport shuttle | From 44 York Street beside Union Station | Back to Union | Solo travellers near Union with light bags |
| Drive and park | Your own car | Your own car | Same-day returns from outside the core |
| Taxi | From the street | From the corral at the pavilion | Spontaneous trips |
The complimentary shuttle details are on the airport's shuttle page; it runs roughly every 15 minutes between Union Station and the pavilion, less often early and late.
Which vehicle suits a Porter trip?
Island-airport passengers usually travel light, so a business sedan for one or two is the norm, and a first-class sedan is common for executives and hosted guests. Families and small groups with checked bags do better in an SUV, which seats up to six with luggage behind. A team arriving together for a conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, about 3 km from the pavilion, fits in an executive Sprinter. Child seats are available at booking. Remember that the tunnel walk is on you; with heavy bags or a display case, add meet & greet so the chauffeur helps from the curb to the tunnel entrance.

What happens if a Porter flight is delayed or diverted?
Flight tracking handles delays: the chauffeur follows the live arrival time and you pay nothing for the airline's lateness. Diversions are rarer but real at a waterfront airport. Fog, strong winds and winter storms occasionally send flights to Pearson instead of the island. If that happens, message us the new arrival point and the chauffeur goes to Pearson, about 30 km and 30 to 50 minutes away; the booking moves rather than being cancelled. If a departure is cancelled and you are rebooked, send the new flight number so the pickup time follows. Our cars run winter tires from November to April, and dispatch checks Ontario 511 before early-morning departures in bad weather.
What should you do the night before an early Porter flight?
A short checklist from the dispatch desk:
- Confirm the departure airport code on your boarding pass: YTZ or YYZ.
- Check the airline's check-in cut-off for your route.
- Confirm your pickup time with us, based on the backwards calculation above.
- Put your ID or passport in your jacket, not your checked bag.
- Have bags by the door; the included wait at home is 15 minutes.
- Charge your phone so you see the chauffeur's message.
Early-morning waterfront traffic is light, so the drive is usually at the fast end of the range, which is a reason to keep the buffer rather than cut it.
How do you combine the flight with a hotel in Toronto?
Visitors on Porter often stay near the waterfront or the Financial District to keep the island close. Our waterfront hotels and Financial District hotels pages cover the areas within a few minutes of Eireann Quay. If you want the flights, hotel and car arranged together, our travel desk can book them alongside the ground transport, so pickup times follow the real itinerary rather than a guess.
Is a car worth it for a flight that is so close to downtown?
Sometimes not, and we say so. If you are staying at a hotel on Front Street with one small bag, the free shuttle from Union or a short walk is perfectly sensible. A car earns its place when you start from home in the suburbs, when it is early or late, when you carry more than a laptop bag, when you travel with children, or when the trip is part of a working day where minutes and privacy matter. The fixed fare is shown before you confirm, with HST separate, and our how our fares work page explains what moves it: vehicle class, addresses, date and time, stops and waiting beyond the included time.
