The UP Express schedule on upexpress.com lists the first weekday train from Union Station at 4:55 a.m., with trains every 15 minutes and a 28-minute run to Pearson Terminal 1. That puts you at T1 around 5:25 a.m., which is too late for most 6 a.m. flights with checked bags. A pre-booked black car leaving downtown about 3:45 a.m. covers the 27 km in 25–45 minutes.
The UP Express to Pearson is a good train, and for plenty of trips we tell people to take it. The first flights of the day are a different problem. This post works the clock backwards from a 6 a.m. departure, shows where the UP Express schedule leaves you, and explains when a car is the honest recommendation.
What does the UP Express schedule look like for early flights?
When we checked the official Union Station departures page on upexpress.com in late September 2026, it listed the first weekday train at 4:55 a.m., the last at 1:00 a.m., and service every 15 minutes, with the trip to Pearson described as 28 minutes. Weekend and holiday times are published separately as a PDF schedule, so a Saturday or Sunday 6 a.m. flight needs its own check. The train stops at Bloor, Mount Dennis and Weston before reaching Pearson station, which is attached to Terminal 1. Timetables change for maintenance, holidays and track work, so treat these as the figures we saw, not a promise; the operator's page on the day you travel is the only source that counts.
Where does the first train leave you for a 6 a.m. departure?
Do the arithmetic. A 4:55 a.m. departure from Union, plus 28 minutes, puts you on the Pearson platform at about 5:23 a.m. Add the walk from the UP Express station into Terminal 1's departures hall, and you reach the check-in area at roughly 5:30 a.m. That is half an hour before your scheduled departure. Airlines set their own check-in and bag-drop cut-offs, and for a departure at 6:00 a.m. those cut-offs usually fall well before 5:30. Security queues at the first wave of the day can also be long; CATSA publishes screening guidance and wait information. In short, for a 6 a.m. flight with a suitcase to check, the first train is too late.
Does the first train work for any early flight at all?
Yes, for some. If your flight leaves at 7:00 a.m. or later, you are flying out of Terminal 1, you have only a carry-on and you have checked in online, the 4:55 a.m. or 5:10 a.m. trains can work. A 7:30 a.m. departure gives you a comfortable margin on the first or second train. The decisive questions are the terminal, the bags and how close you live to Union Station. If you fly from Terminal 3, add the inter-terminal train inside the airport, which takes more time at an hour when every minute matters. If you live in Leslieville or North York, the bigger problem is getting to Union before 4:55 a.m. at all.
How do you get to Union Station before the first UP Express?
This is the step most people forget. Toronto's subway does not run that early: the TTC's regular service starts later in the morning, and on Sundays later still, so check ttc.ca for the opening times on your date. That leaves walking, a night bus, a taxi or a ride-hail to reach Union before 4:55 a.m. Once you are already in a car at 4:30 a.m., it is worth asking why you are getting out at Union at all. Our dispatchers see this pattern often: a guest books a car to the train, then realises the same car could have gone the remaining 27 km to Terminal 3 in about the same time it takes to buy a ticket and wait on the platform.

What does the 6 a.m. flight timeline look like by car?
Here is how we plan a downtown pickup for a 6:00 a.m. domestic departure. These are planning figures; your airline's cut-off may call for an earlier start.
- 3:45 a.m. The chauffeur arrives outside your building and texts you. Bags go in the trunk.
- 3:50 a.m. Departure along the Gardiner Expressway and Highway 427. At this hour traffic is light, and the 27 km usually takes 25–30 minutes.
- 4:20 a.m. Drop-off at the departures curb of Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, right outside your airline's doors.
- 4:25–5:15 a.m. Bag drop, security and the walk to the gate, with time to spare.
For US and international flights, start earlier. The point is not that the car is faster than the train on the open road; it is that the car runs on your schedule, not the first train's.
How does the timeline compare for different flights?
| Situation | UP Express first train | Pre-booked black car |
|---|---|---|
| 6:00 a.m. domestic, checked bag | reaches T1 about 5:25 a.m., usually too late | leave downtown about 3:45 a.m., at the curb by 4:20 a.m. |
| 6:30 a.m. domestic, carry-on only, T1 | very tight, depends on airline cut-off | leave about 4:15 a.m. |
| 7:30 a.m. domestic, T1 | first or second train works | leave about 5:00 a.m. |
| 7:00 a.m. flight from Terminal 3 | add the inter-terminal train | direct to the T3 curb |
| Family of four, early flight | four fares, two transfers | one car, one booking |
| Weekend early flight | check the separate weekend schedule | same planning as weekdays |
Why is Terminal 3 harder by train at dawn?
The UP Express stops only at Terminal 1. Passengers for Terminal 3 ride Pearson's inter-terminal train between the two terminals, which adds a transfer, a wait and a walk with your luggage. At midday that is a minor nuisance. Before 6 a.m., with a check-in deadline approaching, it is the step where a tight plan breaks. Pearson's ground transportation page explains the options at each terminal. A car drops you at the Terminal 3 departures curb directly, and our Pearson terminal pickup guide explains how drop-offs and pickups work at each terminal.
What mistakes do early-flight travellers make?
- Assuming the first train is early enough. Read the airline's cut-off first, then the timetable.
- Forgetting the trip to Union. The subway is not running, so the train journey really starts with a car anyway.
- Ignoring the terminal. Terminal 3 adds an internal transfer.
- Booking the car too late. Request an early pickup the day before at the latest; dispatch confirms the evening before.
- Not checking the weekend schedule. Saturday and Sunday times are published separately.
- Underestimating winter. Snow on the 427 or a closed ramp can add time even at 4 a.m.; we check Ontario 511 before every early run.
When is the UP Express still the best choice?
We are a car company, but we are not going to pretend the train is bad. For a solo traveller on a mid-morning or afternoon flight from Terminal 1, staying at a Financial District hotel connected to Union by the PATH, with a carry-on, the UP Express is simple and predictable, and it ignores rush hour on the 427. It is also a sensible choice for the return leg if you land in the afternoon. Our UP Express vs limo guide lays out the general comparison. The early-flight question is narrower: before about 6:30 a.m., the timetable, the terminal and the trip to Union stack up against the train.
Which vehicle should you book for a pre-dawn airport run?
For one or two travellers with standard bags, a business sedan or the electric Tesla Model Y is the usual choice. A family with car seats and four suitcases needs an SUV or a premier luxury SUV, each seating six with four large bags. A team flying out together to a conference fits an executive Sprinter. Child seats are available at booking. Tell us about skis, golf clubs or instruments so the right vehicle arrives at 3:45 a.m.

How do early pickups work from hotels and condos?
Downtown condos and hotels each handle 4 a.m. a little differently. Hotel front drives are usually open around the clock; condo buildings may have a concierge, a locked lobby or a lane where stopping is easier. Put the building name, entrance and any buzzer detail in the booking notes. The chauffeur arrives a few minutes early, texts when outside and waits; included waiting on non-airport pickups is 15 minutes, then 15-minute blocks, and you are messaged before extra time begins. If you are staying in a Financial District hotel, tell us which entrance you will use.
What does the fixed fare include for an early run?
The reservation engine shows a fixed fare before you confirm. It covers the chauffeur, the vehicle, fuel, airport fees and gratuity, with HST shown separately, and there is no early-morning surge and no meter. What changes it is the vehicle class, the distance and time, extra stops, waiting beyond the included time, the date and season, and add-ons such as child seats, which are available at booking. See how our fares work for the detail, then open /book/ to see the exact figure for your address and departure.
Can you mix the train and a car on the same trip?
Often that is the smartest plan. Take a car at dawn, when the train cannot get you there in time, and take the UP Express home in the afternoon when you land with light bags. Or reverse it: train out on a weekday morning flight that leaves at 10 a.m., car home after a midnight arrival when the platform at Union is the last thing you want. If your outbound day includes a stop before the airport, such as collecting a colleague in Etobicoke, the hourly chauffeur service is the tidier booking, with a three-hour minimum and extra time in 30-minute blocks.
What about the Union Station end on your return?
Arriving at Pearson late and riding the train to Union only to hunt for a taxi with bags is the mirror image of the dawn problem. A pre-booked pickup at Pearson tracks your flight, with 30 minutes of waiting included on Canadian domestic and US flights and 60 minutes on other international arrivals, counted from landing. The car meets you at the designated pre-arranged pickup area on the arrivals curb, as Pearson explains; meet and greet inside the hall is an optional add-on. Our Union Station car service covers rides from the station itself when you do use the train.
Planning the rest of an early-flight trip
If the early flight is part of a bigger trip, our travel desk can book flights and a hotel and line up the transfers at both ends. Travellers coming in from the east end face a slightly different version of this problem; our post on Guildwood station pickups covers it, and Markham to Pearson car service looks at the 407 versus the 401 for airport runs from the north-east.
How do you book an early airport car?
Open the reservation engine, choose an airport transfer, enter your address, flight number and terminal, and pick a pickup time that matches your airline's cut-off. The fixed fare appears before you confirm. Cancellations follow the sitewide rule: no charge more than 72 hours before pickup, 10 % at 72 hours or less, 50 % at 48 hours or less, and 100 % at 24 hours or less or a no-show, measured from the scheduled pickup.
