A car service to the Princess of Wales Theatre takes you to 300 King Street West, about 1 km and 5–10 minutes from Union Station and about 27 km, 25–45 minutes, from Pearson (YYZ). Because King Street is a transit-priority street, the chauffeur sets down on John Street or another side street and waits nearby by the hour. See the fixed fare first at /book/.
The Princess of Wales is the larger of the two Mirvish houses on King Street West, built for big touring musicals, and it sits next door to the Royal Alexandra. That shared block shapes every car plan on show night. The general picture of the four Mirvish theatres, with set-down notes for each, is on our Theatre District car service page. This post zooms in on one theatre and one kind of evening: dinner on King West, a long musical, and a smooth ride home.
How does a car service to the Princess of Wales Theatre work on show night?
A car service to the Princess of Wales Theatre is booked like any other evening on our reservation engine: you enter the pickup, "Princess of Wales Theatre, 300 King Street West" as the destination, the curtain time and the vehicle, and you see the fixed fare before confirming. On the night, the chauffeur arrives 10 minutes early, texts the plate and the colour of the car, and drives you to a legal stopping point on a side street a few steps from the marquee. During the show the car waits within a few blocks. At the curtain call you send one text, and the chauffeur is at the agreed corner when you reach it. Most of our theatre bookings at this address are on the hourly chauffeur service, because a musical night is dinner, the show and a drink afterwards, not one ride.
Why does King Street change the drop-off?
King Street West through the core is run as a transit-priority corridor, with limits on through traffic and on stopping, so cars cannot idle in front of the theatre the way they might on a quiet street. Our chauffeurs never stop in the streetcar lane or block a stop. The usual set-down is John Street, on the west side of the theatre, or a nearby side street such as Duncan or Pearl when John is busy, and the walk is under a minute. If it is raining, the chauffeur walks you to the canopy with an umbrella. The City of Toronto posts the current King Street rules and any event closures, and our dispatchers check them on show days.
How far is the Princess of Wales from where you are staying?
| From | Distance to 300 King St W | Typical evening drive | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Union Station / Financial District hotels | about 1 km | 5–10 min | walkable on a dry night |
| Waterfront / Queens Quay | about 1.5 km | 5–10 min | Spadina or York north |
| Yorkville | about 4 km | 12–20 min | University Avenue south |
| Liberty Village | about 2.5 km | 8–15 min | King or Wellington east |
| North York Centre | about 16 km | 25–40 min | Yonge or the Allen and Spadina |
| Markham | about 35 km | 35–50 min | DVP and Gardiner |
| Oakville | about 38 km | 35–50 min | QEW and Gardiner |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 27 km | 25–45 min | 427 and Gardiner, exit at Spadina |
These are planning figures for an evening arrival; the reservation engine quotes the exact fixed fare for your address, date and vehicle. Between 6:30 and 7:45 pm the last kilometre is the slowest part of the trip.
What does an anniversary night from Markham look like?
A typical booking from our dispatch notes, for a couple seeing a Saturday evening musical:
- 4:45 pm pickup in Unionville in a first-class sedan.
- 5:35 pm set-down at a restaurant on King West, two blocks from the theatre; dinner at 5:45.
- 7:25 pm a two-minute hop to John Street, five minutes before the house fills.
- 7:30 pm to about 10:15 pm the show; the chauffeur waits nearby.
- 10:20 pm pickup at the agreed corner, a short dessert stop in Yorkville, then home by midnight.
That is about seven hours on an hourly booking. A shorter version, collected at 6 pm and driven straight home after the curtain, fits in four to five hours. Our date night and proposal page has more ideas for a special evening.
Where should you eat before a show here?
King Street West between Spadina and University is one of the densest restaurant strips in the city, so most theatregoers eat within 300 metres of the theatre. Book a table for 5:30 or 5:45 pm for a 7:30 curtain, and tell the restaurant you have a show; kitchens on this strip are used to it. If dinner is further away, in the Distillery District about 3 km east or in Yorkville about 4 km north, keep the car by the hour so the hop between dinner and the theatre is ten minutes, not a hunt for a taxi. Visitors can find more ideas through Destination Toronto.
How do you avoid the crush when the Royal Alex lets out too?
The two theatres stand side by side, and on many nights their shows end within 15 minutes of each other, so more than 3,000 people can reach the same sidewalk together. Add a concert at Roy Thomson Hall a block east and the corner of King and John becomes the busiest curb downtown. The fix is distance. Agree a pickup corner one block north or south, on Adelaide, Pearl or Wellington, text "leaving" from your seat during the bows, and walk away from the crowd rather than into it. Our post on Roy Thomson Hall concert nights covers the neighbouring hall's exit pattern.
Hourly, one-way or a timed return?
| Evening plan | Best booking | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dinner, show and drinks | Hourly, 4–6 hours | one car for every leg, no waiting on King St |
| Show only, from a downtown hotel | One-way there, timed return | short trips, predictable finish |
| Show only, from the suburbs | Hourly, 4–5 hours | the chauffeur waits instead of driving back empty |
| Matinee plus a sight | Hourly, 5–6 hours | CN Tower or market before a 2 pm curtain |
| Group of 8–12 | Sprinter, hourly | one meet point keeps the group together |
Sedans, SUVs and Sprinters carry a 3-hour minimum, with extra time in 30-minute blocks. For a timed return, set the pickup 15 minutes after the listed running time; Mirvish publishes running times on its official site, and long musicals sometimes run past them.
What are the mistakes that spoil a King Street theatre night?
- Booking dinner too late. A 6:30 table for a 7:30 curtain leaves no margin; aim for 5:30.
- Meeting the car in front of the theatre. The curb there is the busiest and least legal; walk a block.
- Splitting the group at intermission. If someone leaves early, tell the chauffeur by text first.
- Ignoring game nights. A Blue Jays game or an event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre a few blocks south fills the same streets.
- Forgetting coats and bags. Leave shopping in the trunk; the car is locked and watched.
- Driving yourself in. Garage exits on show nights can take 20 minutes, and nobody gets a drink with dinner.
How do visitors flying in for one show plan the day?
Plenty of guests fly in from Montreal, New York or Chicago for a single production. Book the car with your flight number; the chauffeur tracks the landing and meets you at Pearson's pre-arranged pickup area on the arrivals curb of Terminal 1 or 3, with meet and greet inside arrivals available at booking. Waiting is included from actual landing: 30 minutes for Canadian domestic and US flights, 60 minutes for other international arrivals. From the airport it is about 27 km to the theatre. If you still need a room, the Entertainment District hotels are a short walk from the door, and our travel desk books flights and rooms on the same itinerary as the car.
How does a matinee with the family work?
Weekend matinees suit families and visiting grandparents. The CN Tower is about 1 km south of the theatre, so a morning visit, an early lunch on King Street and a 2 pm curtain all fit on one hourly booking of five to six hours from the suburbs. Infant, convertible and booster seats are available at booking; tell us the children's ages and the chauffeur fits them before pickup. An SUV seats six with room for a stroller, and the car is warm and waiting when a tired child needs to leave at the interval.
Which vehicle suits a Princess of Wales night?
For a couple, a business sedan is practical and a first-class sedan is the occasion choice. Two couples fit a premier luxury SUV. A birthday group or a hen party of up to seven travels in the executive Sprinter, and up to twelve in a Sprinter luxury van. Stretch limousines come from vetted partner operators in the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network, carry a 4-hour minimum and need a longer stretch of curb, so they are staged a little further from King Street. Rolls-Royce and Maybach cars are on request.
How do office groups and client nights run?
Companies often book a block of seats for a team or for clients. One Sprinter from the office, or several sedans collecting guests from different hotels, keeps the evening on one account and one invoice. A coordinator confirms each car's timing by text and staggers the returns, so the client who leaves at the interval is not left waiting. See corporate events and galas for how we run multi-car evenings.
Is the subway or streetcar a better option?
Sometimes. St. Andrew station on Line 1 is about a five-minute walk, and the 504 King streetcar stops close by; the TTC is the most economical choice for a solo theatregoer near the subway. Union Station, about 1 km away, serves GO trains for commuters heading home. A car is better for couples and groups from outside the subway's reach, for older guests, for families with small children, for evenings in formal wear and on cold or wet nights, and for anyone who wants dinner, show and home without watching a timetable.
What changes in winter and in festival weeks?
From November to April our cars run winter tires, and the chauffeur picks a cleared curb over the closest one. December brings holiday productions, shoppers and office parties, so allow 10 to 15 extra minutes. In September, the film festival can close King Street West to traffic for several days; our TIFF 2026 car service post explains how drop-offs work when the street becomes a pedestrian zone. For another historic stage nearby, see Massey Hall show nights.
What does the fare include, and how do you book?
We do not publish prices. The reservation engine shows the fixed, all-in fare before you confirm: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, 407 ETR tolls on the planned route and gratuity, with HST shown separately. It changes with the vehicle class, the distance from your pickup, the number of hours, extra stops and the date. Meet and greet and child seats are available at booking. Cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10 %; 48 hours or less, 50 %; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100 %.
