How early to arrive at Pearson depends on the flight. Many travellers aim for about two hours before domestic flights and three hours before US and international ones; Air Canada asks passengers on US flights leaving Toronto before 9 a.m. to arrive at least three hours ahead. Check your airline's cut-offs, then add the 25–45 minute drive from downtown and a rush-hour or winter buffer.
How early to arrive at Pearson for each kind of flight?
The airline sets the deadline; you set the margin. Pearson handles three kinds of departure, and each has a different set of queues between the curb and the gate. Domestic flights have check-in, bag drop and the CATSA security screening. US flights add US preclearance, because travellers to the United States clear American border processing at Pearson before boarding. International flights add longer check-in windows and passport checks at the counter. Our Pearson airport transportation page explains the airport itself; this post is the clock. Start with your airline's published check-in and bag-drop cut-offs, which you can find on the airline's site, such as Air Canada or WestJet, then build backwards.
What is a sensible timeline for each flight type?
Typical planning targets that our dispatchers use for travellers who check bags, before adding the drive. Your airline's rules always win.
| Flight type | Arrive at the terminal | Queues to clear | Pickup buffer we add |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic, carry-on only | 90 min to 2 h before departure | Security | 15 min off-peak |
| Domestic, checked bags | About 2 h before | Bag drop, security | 15–30 min |
| USA, any time of day | About 3 h before | Bag drop, security, US preclearance | 30 min |
| USA, departing before 9 a.m. | At least 3 h before (Air Canada guidance) | Morning bank of US flights | 30–45 min |
| International long-haul | About 3 h before | Check-in, bag drop, security | 30 min |
| Holiday weekends and March Break | Add 30–60 min to the above | Everything is longer | 45 min |
How do you work backwards to a pickup time?
Take one real example. A family of four flies to Orlando at 7:40 a.m. from Terminal 1 and lives near Yonge and Eglinton.
- Departure: 7:40 a.m.
- Arrive at the terminal three hours ahead for an early US flight: 4:40 a.m.
- Drive from Midtown at that hour: about 25 km and 25–30 minutes, with almost no traffic.
- Buffer for loading four suitcases and two car seats: 10 minutes.
- Pickup: 4:00 a.m.
The same trip at 5 p.m. on a Friday would need a pickup around 1:15 p.m., because the drive could take 45 minutes and the outbound 401 is unpredictable. The clock, not the distance, does the damage.
How long is the drive to Pearson from across the GTA?
Typical planning figures for the drive alone. Our trip planner shows your exact address.
- Downtown Toronto and Union Station: 27 km, 25–45 min.
- Yorkville and Midtown: 25 km, 25–40 min.
- North York: 20 km, 20–35 min.
- Etobicoke: 12 km, 15–25 min.
- Scarborough: about 35 km, 35–50 min.
- Markham: 40 km, 35–50 min.
- Oakville: 30 km, 25–40 min.
- Burlington: about 50 km, 35–55 min.
- Hamilton: about 70 km, 50–70 min.
At 4 a.m. most of these shrink to the low end. Between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, plan for the high end or beyond.
Why do US flights need more time?
Because of US preclearance. Travellers to the United States clear US border processing at Pearson before they board, rather than on landing, so there is an extra queue after security. Morning banks of US departures can make that queue long, which is why Air Canada specifically asks passengers on US flights leaving Toronto before 9 a.m. to be at the airport no later than three hours before departure. Bring the right document, a valid passport or other accepted travel document, and check the rules on the US CBP site if you are not a Canadian or US citizen. Trusted traveller membership can shorten the wait; our post on NEXUS at Pearson covers how it helps.
How long does security at Pearson take?
It varies by hour, day and season. Pre-board screening at Pearson is run by CATSA, which publishes guidance on what to pack and how to move through faster. Early-morning banks, holiday weekends, March Break and the start of summer are the busiest times. You will move faster if liquids, laptops and tablets are ready, belts and jackets come off quickly, and children know what to expect. If you see a long line at your checkpoint, ask staff whether another is open. None of this changes the advice to arrive early; it just helps you use the time you have.

Terminal 1 or Terminal 3: does it change the timing?
The terminal changes where you are dropped, not how early you need to be. Check your booking; airlines are assigned to Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, and assignments can change. Air Canada flies from Terminal 1, which is also where the UP Express arrives. If you are dropped at the wrong terminal, the free Terminal Link train connects the two, but it adds time you may not have. When you book a car, give the airline and flight number, and the chauffeur heads to the right departures level. Our post on Pearson Terminal 1 car service covers the Air Canada side in detail.
What buffers should you add for traffic and weather?
Our dispatchers add buffers on top of the airline's advice:
- Weekday rush hour: 30–45 minutes, especially on the Gardiner west and the 401.
- First snowfall of the season: 45 minutes; everyone drives slowly and cars spin out on ramps.
- Freezing rain or a storm warning: consider leaving an hour early and checking the airline app for delays.
- Long-weekend Fridays and the Sunday return: 30 minutes.
- Major events downtown: concerts, games and festivals close streets; add 15 minutes from the core.
We check Ontario 511 before early-morning runs, and our cars run winter tires from November to April.
What is the cost of arriving too late?
Missing a check-in cut-off usually means losing your seat and paying to rebook, or waiting for the next flight with space. Many airlines close check-in and bag drop well before departure; Air Canada's published deadlines for Toronto close them 60 minutes before departure, and the gate closes before the scheduled time too. Missing the gate after clearing security is just as final. Compare that with the cost of arriving forty minutes early: a coffee and a quiet seat. If anything goes wrong on the road, a chauffeur who knows the alternate routes, the 401 instead of the Gardiner, or Highway 409 into the terminals, is worth more than any app.
How early should the car pick you up from a hotel?
The same logic applies, with one extra step: the hotel lobby. Allow 10 minutes to check out, settle the bill and get bags down. From a Financial District hotel at 7 a.m. on a weekday, a 3-hour-before arrival for a 10:30 international flight means a pickup around 6:50. From an airport hotel, the drive is short and the shuttle line can be long; a car is waiting at the door at the time you choose. Our page on Pearson airport hotels covers the hotel strip, and our travel desk can book a room near the airport before an early departure.
Do families and older travellers need extra time?
Yes, and the extra time belongs at both ends. At home, loading car seats, strollers and four suitcases takes longer than loading one carry-on, so set the pickup 10 to 15 minutes earlier. At the terminal, children need the washroom at the worst moment, strollers go through security separately, and older parents may walk slowly between the curb and the counter. Airlines offer assistance, including wheelchairs from the check-in desk to the gate, but it should be requested in advance through the airline. For a grandparent flying alone, mention it at booking: the chauffeur unloads close to the doors, gets the bags onto a cart and makes sure the airline's assistance is in sight before driving off. Build these minutes in from the start, and the morning stays calm.
Checklist for the night before
- Check in online and download boarding passes.
- Confirm the terminal on the airline app.
- Weigh checked bags; overweight fees and repacking at the counter cost time.
- Put passports, NEXUS cards and any visas or travel authorisations in one pocket.
- Charge phones and tablets.
- Confirm the pickup time with dispatch and put bags by the door.
- Check the weather and Ontario 511 for overnight closures.
Which vehicle helps you leave on time?
Loading time counts. Two adults, two children, four cases and a stroller take five minutes to load into an SUV and fifteen to cram into a car that is too small. A business sedan suits two passengers and two bags. A group of colleagues or a big family travelling together fits one executive Sprinter, which also keeps everyone arriving at the terminal at the same moment. Child seats are available at booking and installed before the car reaches your door. The reservation engine shows the fixed, all-in fare for each vehicle before you confirm.
Could an hourly chauffeur help on a travel day?
Sometimes. If your departure day includes a morning meeting downtown, a lunch and then the airport, the hourly chauffeur service keeps one car and one chauffeur with you from the first stop to the departures curb, bags locked in the trunk. The minimum is three hours for sedans, SUVs and vans, with extra time in 30-minute blocks. It removes the risk of a rideshare that does not show up at the worst moment, and it lets you take calls in private on the 427.
How do you book a pickup at the right time?
- Open /book/ or press the floating Book now button.
- Choose an airport transfer to Pearson and enter the terminal, airline and departure time.
- Set the pickup time you calculated, or tell dispatch the flight time and ask for advice.
- Add passengers, bags and any child seats, then see the fixed fare.
- Confirm. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 72 hours or less is 10 %, 48 hours or less 50 % and 24 hours or less 100 %.
