Car service to Kleinburg from downtown Toronto covers about 40 km in 35–50 minutes via Highway 400 or the 427; from Pearson it is about 20 km, 20–30 minutes. The McMichael Canadian Art Collection closed in July 2026 for redevelopment and expects to reopen in 2029, but the village, its restaurants and nearby conservation areas are open. An hourly chauffeur suits a half-day visit.
Kleinburg used to be planned around the McMichael. With the gallery closed for a rebuild, the question we hear at dispatch has changed to "is it still worth going?" Our McMichael and Kleinburg page covers the distances and the redevelopment. This post is the planning companion: who the village suits now, what to do in each season, the mistakes visitors make, and how to use a driver well.
Is car service to Kleinburg still worth booking while the McMichael is closed?
For the right people, yes. The McMichael closed to the public at the end of July 2026 for a major redevelopment and says it expects to welcome visitors back in 2029, running programmes at partner venues in the meantime. If your only reason to go was the Group of Seven galleries, wait, or see Canadian art downtown at the Art Gallery of Ontario instead; our AGO page covers the drop-off. If you want a country-village lunch, a walk in the Humber River valley, autumn colour or a quiet afternoon away from the city, Kleinburg still delivers, and it is closer than most people think.
Who is a Kleinburg day out best for now?
- Couples looking for a long lunch and a stroll outside the city, without anyone driving home after wine.
- Visiting relatives who want to see somewhere green and historic between family dinners.
- Photographers chasing autumn colour in the Humber valley.
- Families combining the village with Canada's Wonderland or Vaughan Mills, which are close by.
- Business visitors with an afternoon free near Pearson before an evening flight.
- Wedding guests staying in Vaughan for a weekend celebration in the countryside.
It is less suited to a first-time Toronto visitor with one free day; downtown has more to offer that day.
How far is Kleinburg, and how long is the drive?
| From | Distance to Kleinburg | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto / Union Station | about 40 km | 35–50 min |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 20 km | 20–30 min |
| Yorkville & Midtown | about 38 km | 35–50 min |
| Vaughan Metropolitan Centre | about 15 km | 15–25 min |
| Canada's Wonderland | about 13 km | 15–20 min |
| Brampton | about 25 km | 25–35 min |
These are planning figures; the reservation engine quotes the exact fixed fare for your address, date and vehicle. Weekday afternoon traffic on the 400 northbound is the main variable.
What can you do in Kleinburg by season?
Spring (April–June): the valley greens up, trails dry out, and patios open. A good season for a walk at the Kortright Centre, run by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, followed by lunch in the village.
Summer (July–August): long evenings, patio dinners and a quieter alternative to the waterfront on hot weekends. Combine with an evening at Canada's Wonderland for families.
Autumn (late September–October): the favourite. The Humber valley turns red and gold, and weekend lunches book up. Go on a weekday if you can.
Winter (November–March): a cosy lunch after a snowy walk, with fewer crowds. Our cars run winter tires from November to April, and the hills on Islington Avenue and Nashville Road are taken slowly.
Individual shops and restaurants set their own hours, so check before you go. Visit Vaughan lists local events.

Why use a driver instead of driving yourself?
Three reasons come up again and again. First, parking: Islington Avenue through the village is narrow and busy on weekends, and circling for a spot eats into a short visit. Second, lunch: Kleinburg is a long-lunch destination, and a chauffeur means nobody has to limit their wine. Third, the return: ride-hail cars are thin on the ground in the village, and a 40 km trip home is not one you want to wait for. With our hourly chauffeur service, one car and one chauffeur stay with you for a three-hour minimum, with extra time in 30-minute blocks, and the car is waiting whenever you are ready.
How long should you book the chauffeur for?
From downtown, the drive is about 40–50 minutes each way, so a three-hour booking leaves only about 90 minutes in the village, which is enough for lunch and a short stroll. Most of our Kleinburg bookings are four or five hours: the drive up, a walk, lunch, a browse along Islington Avenue and the drive home. Add a conservation-area walk or a stop at Vaughan Mills and six hours is more realistic. From a Pearson-area hotel, the shorter 20 km drive means three hours goes further.
What mistakes do Kleinburg visitors make?
- Going for the McMichael without checking. It is closed until its expected 2029 reopening.
- Arriving at noon on an October Saturday without a lunch booking. Autumn weekends fill up.
- Booking one-way rides and planning to call a car home. Return rides from the village can be slow to find.
- Leaving downtown at 4 p.m. on a weekday. The 400 northbound is at its slowest.
- Wearing city shoes for the trails. Valley paths can be muddy in spring and icy in winter.
- Overpacking the day. The village is small; the pleasure is in slowing down.
How do you combine Kleinburg with other stops?
Kleinburg, Canada's Wonderland and Vaughan Mills sit in a triangle roughly 12 to 15 km apart. A family day might be the park in the morning and dinner in the village; a shopping day might be Vaughan Mills and lunch in Kleinburg. The Legoland Discovery Centre and Vaughan Mills page covers the mall. For a countryside loop, the chauffeur can continue north and west through King Township before heading home. Our sibling post on Vaughan to downtown Toronto covers the commute side of the area.
Can you go straight from Pearson to Kleinburg?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest airport side trips in the GTA. Kleinburg is about 20 km north of Pearson, typically 20–30 minutes via Highway 427. Relatives arriving from abroad often go straight to family in Kleinburg or Woodbridge; business travellers with a late flight sometimes spend the afternoon in the village. The chauffeur tracks your flight, with 30 minutes of waiting included on Canadian domestic and US flights and 60 minutes on other international arrivals, and meets you at the pre-arranged pickup area on the arrivals curb, as Pearson explains. Meet and greet inside the hall is an optional add-on.
Is Kleinburg good for a special occasion?
Yes. Anniversaries, milestone birthdays, engagement lunches and small wedding parties all suit the village. For two, a first-class sedan makes the drive up the 400 part of the occasion. For a family celebration of six, an SUV or premier luxury SUV; for up to seven, an executive Sprinter. For larger weddings in the surrounding countryside, see our wedding limo page; multi-vehicle plans are priced in writing by a coordinator. Stretch limousines come from vetted partner operators in the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network and are better suited to occasions than to narrow village streets.
What about art lovers during the closure?
If Canadian art was the reason for your trip, there are good alternatives while the McMichael is rebuilt. The gallery itself lists exhibitions at partner venues and online programmes on its site. Downtown, the Art Gallery of Ontario holds a significant Canadian collection, and an hourly chauffeur can pair it with lunch in Yorkville or a stop at the Royal Ontario Museum. When the McMichael reopens, a gallery visit plus lunch in the village will again be one of the best half days north of the city, and we will update our pages as soon as the gallery confirms dates.
What does a sample five-hour Kleinburg afternoon look like?
A plan that works well for a couple from downtown, with typical drive times:
- 11:30 a.m. Pickup downtown; Highway 400 north, about 40–50 minutes.
- 12:20 p.m. Set-down on Islington Avenue for a stroll along the main street.
- 12:45 p.m. Long lunch at a village restaurant you have booked.
- 2:15 p.m. Short drive to a conservation area trailhead in the Humber valley for an hour's walk; the car waits at the parking area.
- 3:30 p.m. Back to the village for coffee or a last browse.
- 4:00 p.m. Head home, ideally before the 400 southbound builds, arriving downtown by about 4:45 p.m.
Swap the walk for Vaughan Mills on a wet day, or extend into dinner if you are in no hurry; extra time is added in 30-minute blocks.
Is Kleinburg suitable for older relatives or guests with limited mobility?
Largely, yes, with planning. The main street is compact, and the chauffeur sets down as close as possible to your restaurant or shop. Valley trails are uneven and not suitable for everyone, so choose a paved or short route or skip the walk. We have a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for anyone who must stay seated in a wheelchair or scooter, available when booked in advance; chauffeurs fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers for passengers who can transfer to a seat.
Where should visitors stay?
Most visitors stay downtown and make Kleinburg a day trip. Those visiting family in Vaughan, attending a wedding nearby or flying out early often stay at hotels along Highway 7 or near the airport; see our North York and Vaughan hotels page. If you are planning flights and a hotel for a family visit, our travel desk can arrange them and line up the transfers.
What does the fixed fare include?
The reservation engine shows a fixed fare before you confirm: the chauffeur, the vehicle, fuel and gratuity, with HST shown separately, and airport fees on airport trips. No surge, no meter, and no premium on a sunny October Saturday. The fare changes with the vehicle class, the hours booked or the distance, extra stops, waiting beyond what is included, the date and season, and add-ons such as child seats, which are available at booking. See how our fares work.

- Enter your pickup address in Toronto, Vaughan or at Pearson.
- Choose four or five hours for a relaxed half day.
