A car service to Billy Bishop airport drops you at the mainland pavilion on Eireann Quay, about 3 to 5 km and 10 to 20 minutes from the Financial District, with a fixed fare shown before you book. Parking suits a solo day trip if you live outside the core; for longer trips, families or late returns, a pre-booked car is usually simpler.
Car service to Billy Bishop airport or park the car: what are you really comparing?
You are comparing three costs, not one: money, time and effort at the end of the trip. A car service to Billy Bishop airport is a single fixed fare each way, shown in our reservation engine before you confirm, with the chauffeur tracking your return flight. Parking is a daily charge that grows with every night away, plus the drive in, plus the walk from the lot, plus the drive home when you land tired. Our Billy Bishop airport car service page covers the island airport itself, from the tunnel to the curb; this post is only about the decision you make the night before: drive and park, ride the free shuttle, or book a car. We do not print prices, so instead we show you the questions that decide which option wins for your trip.
How does parking at Billy Bishop work?
The airport's own To and From page says it offers multiple parking options, and its parking link leads to the official Billy Bishop parking site, where you can see current locations and book online. We do not repeat the details here because rates and lots change; check the site for your dates. The practical points from the airport's pick-up and drop-off guidance are what matter for planning: the curb outside the mainland pavilion and ferry terminal is for active loading only and is a no-parking zone, there are a few complimentary spaces inside the turning circle limited to a five-minute wait, and anyone arriving early or waiting for a delayed passenger is pointed to the parking. In other words, the island airport has very little room for cars that are not moving.
When does parking make sense?
Parking is honestly the better choice in a few clear cases:
- A same-day return where you drive in early, fly to Ottawa or Montreal and fly back the same evening.
- You live outside the core, for example in Oakville or Richmond Hill, travel alone and want to leave on your own schedule.
- You need your car straight after landing, say for a drive to a cottage that same evening.
- You are already driving downtown for another reason and the flight is a short add-on.
If two or more of those are true, compare the parking for your dates with the fixed fare for both legs in our engine and pick the lower total.
When does a pre-booked car win?
The longer the trip and the bigger the party, the faster parking loses. A four-night trip means four or five days of charges for a car that does nothing. A family of four needs the space for luggage and car seats on the way in and still has to unload at the curb and then go to the lot. Late returns are the other big case: the last flights of the evening arrive when nobody wants to walk to a lot, clear a windshield in February and then drive the Gardiner. A pre-booked car avoids all of it. The chauffeur tracks the flight, waits nearby, and messages you the spot as you come up from the tunnel. On the way out, you step from the car to the pavilion door with the bags, and the car leaves.

What about the free shuttle from Union Station?
It is a genuine option and we would rather you knew about it. According to the airport's shuttle page, complimentary shuttle buses run between the airport's mainland building at 2 Eireann Quay and a stop at 44 York Street, on the west side of the Fairmont Royal York across from Union Station. They depart roughly every 15 minutes on a bump-and-go schedule, less often early in the morning and late at night, and the ride takes about 15 minutes depending on traffic. If you are already at Union Station, staying at a hotel nearby, or arriving by GO or VIA, the shuttle is hard to beat for one person with light luggage. A car wins when you are starting from home, from Yorkville or the suburbs, when you carry real luggage, when you travel with children, or when you land after the shuttle thins out.
How do the options compare side by side?
| Option | Best for | Door to door? | Luggage and children | Late-night return | Booked ahead? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drive and park | Solo, same-day trips, suburban drivers | Yes, but you drive both ways | Fine, plus the walk from the lot | You drive home tired | Parking can be pre-booked |
| Free shuttle from Union | Travellers already at or near Union Station | No: Union to the pavilion | Light luggage | Runs less often late | No |
| TTC streetcar and walk | Waterfront locals travelling light | No | Light luggage only | Possible | No |
| Taxi from the corral | Spontaneous short trips | Yes | Whatever car is next | Queue can build | No |
| Pre-booked black car | Families, longer trips, executives, late returns | Yes | Vehicle chosen in advance, child seats at booking | Flight-tracked and waiting | Yes, fixed fare |
How far is Billy Bishop from where you are starting?
Typical planning figures by car to the Eireann Quay pavilion: the Financial District and Union Station about 3 to 5 km and 10 to 20 minutes; Liberty Village and King West about 2 to 3 km and 8 to 15 minutes; Yorkville and Midtown about 6 to 7 km and 15 to 25 minutes; North York about 17 km and 25 to 40 minutes; Etobicoke about 15 km and 20 to 30 minutes; Mississauga about 28 km and 30 to 45 minutes; Markham about 35 km and 35 to 50 minutes; Toronto Pearson about 30 km and 30 to 50 minutes. The short city trips are where traffic is least predictable: Bathurst, Front and Lake Shore can stall on game nights and summer weekends. The trip planner measures your own address.
What does the car service fare include?
The reservation engine shows one fixed, all-in fare before you confirm, with HST shown separately: the chauffeur, the vehicle, fuel, any airport fees and the gratuity. There is no meter. What changes it is the vehicle class, your exact address, the date and time, any extra stop and waiting beyond the included allowance. Included waiting after landing is 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US flights and 60 minutes on other international arrivals, and 15 minutes on other pickups such as your home. Our how our fares work page explains the model. A short hop from a Front Street hotel sits at the low end of our airport work; a Markham pickup is longer and priced to match.
What are the hidden costs of parking that people forget?
Parking looks cheap when you only count the daily charge. The real list is longer:
- Fuel and wear for the drive in and back, which is not trivial from the 905 region.
- Your time spent driving rather than working or resting in the back seat.
- The walk with luggage between lot, pavilion and tunnel entrance.
- Winter mornings, when a car that sat on the waterfront for four nights needs clearing.
- Extended trips, when a delayed or cancelled flight adds a day you did not plan for.
- Tiredness, the one that matters most after a late flight.
None of these is a reason never to park. They are reasons to compare the true total, not just the rate on the sign.
Which travellers usually choose which option?
From the trips we see:
- The Ottawa day-tripper who lives in Leaside often parks, or books a car only for the way home.
- The family flying to a holiday connection almost always books a car, especially with car seats.
- The consultant on a Monday-to-Thursday rotation books a car both ways, because four nights of parking adds up.
- The Union Station commuter takes the free shuttle and is right to.
- The executive hosting a visitor books a first-class sedan so the guest is met at the pavilion.
If you are unsure which you are, price the car for both legs in the engine and compare it with the parking quote for your dates.

How does the hourly chauffeur change the maths?
It changes it completely for business days. If you fly in from Ottawa or Montreal for a day of meetings, parking does not apply and a single transfer leaves you hailing rides between buildings. Our hourly chauffeur service keeps one car and chauffeur for a three-hour minimum, with extra time in 30-minute blocks: met at the pavilion, Bay Street at 10:00, lunch in Yorkville, a visit in Liberty Village, back to the island for the evening flight. Your overnight bag stays in the trunk. For more on the island airport's regular flyers, see our post on Porter and ground transport at Billy Bishop.
What should you do if you decide to drive?
Plan the extra minutes. Book parking online in advance if the site offers it, leave time to park and walk, and remember the curb and turning-circle spaces are for loading, not waiting. If someone is collecting you in their own car, they should wait in the parking until you message that you are through, then use the five-minute spaces. Check Ontario 511 and event schedules before you leave, because Exhibition Place and Rogers Centre events can slow the waterfront. And if your return lands very late, consider booking a car just for that leg and leaving your own car at home in the first place.
Does the tunnel or ferry change the decision?
Not much, because everyone uses them whichever way they arrive. Cars do not drive onto the island in normal passenger use; you reach the terminal through the pedestrian tunnel or the 90-second ferry. The airport notes that vehicles can cross on the ferry to the island side, subject to the ferry fee and parking charges, but for most travellers that is unnecessary. The walk from curb to check-in by tunnel takes under six minutes according to the airport. Our post on the Billy Bishop tunnel explains exactly where the car meets you when you come up.
Can one booking cover a Pearson connection too?
Yes. Some itineraries land at Pearson from abroad and continue from the island, or the reverse. The drive between the two airports is about 30 km and 30 to 50 minutes, and the Pearson to Billy Bishop route explains how to time it. If the trip also needs flights or a waterfront hotel, our travel desk can arrange them with the car so one plan holds everything.
